[Finetech Japan 2017] V-technology, Disclosure of FHM, feasible UHD of 738ppi

Reporter : Hana Oh(HanaOh@ubiresearch.com)

V-technology has released of FHM(Fine Hybrid Mask) which can realize UHD of 738ppi in Finetech Japan 2017 held on 5th.

The existing FMM is made by braiding and welding. However, this method is not only difficult to manufacture, but also has difficulty in realizing a high resolution due to the structural limitations of mask such as pattern (hole) and deflection due to its own weight.

In Finetech Japan 2015, V-technology had released the concept of FMM which had improved these disadvantages. Two years later, however, it has released mass-producible a prototype of FHM (Fine Hybrid Mask) beyond the concept in 2017.

<Non-tension structured fine hybrid mask of V-technology>

FHM of V-technology adopted a different electroforming and non-tension structure than the existing FMM manufacturing method. The person concerned mentioned that this reduced the weight of the FMM to 1/10 level of that of the existing one, and solved the problem of the mask bending due to its own weight and shadow interference caused by it. Also, added that by changing the manufacturing process, the accuracy of the FMM could be increased and enabled a 738ppi UHD implementation.

V-technology has introduced the concept of Vertical deposition system which can utilize FHM in addition to FHM. This system can transport the glass substrate and FHM vertically, simultaneous deposition is possible by putting up to 2 pieces of glass substrate and FHM respectively.

Also, a V-technology official noted that the vertical deposition system reduced the spacing between source and FHM and improved step coverage and uniformity degradation due to diffuse light, and said that yield improvement is possible since it is difficult to attach the particles to the FHM or glass substrate due to the vertical type of deposition equipment.

Recently, consumers’ needs for high resolution is increasing, and as the industry is actively moving to meet this demand, attention on how FHM of V-technology will work as a solution is paid for future moves.

Ink-jet printing OLED, Next-generation large-area display

Ink-jet printing OLED is attracting public attention once again as a next-generation large-area display.

At the keynote session of Finetech Japan 2017 held at Tokyo Big Sight as from May 5, CSOT in China prospected that next-generation large-area display would be ink-jet printing. York Zhao, the CTO of CSOT said that when the price of a new product is 1.2 to 1.3 times that of an existing product, it is the right time for the existing product to be replaced with new one. This principle has been applied when the CRT and PDP market was replaced by LCD. He added, “The price of large-area OLEDs should drop 1.2 to 1.3 times lower than LCDs to lead to a full-fledged OLED era, and ink-jet printing technology is the best way to assist the drop in price of OLED.”

<CSOT, York Zhao CTO>

In 2016, CSOT established the printing display alliance called “Guangdong Juhua printing display technology” together with Tianma, and has been participated by kateeva, DuPont, ULVAC, Merck and Jusung Engeering.

Following the announcement of CSOT, JOLED introduced various OLED panels in direct application of ink-jet printing. One of the most interesting devices was the ink-jet printing 21.6 inch 4K (3840 x 2160, 204 ppi) AMOLED panel produced in Gen 4.5 line. Yoneharu Takubo, the CTO of JDI said, “Since the establishment of JOLED, we have been improving ppi, and developed a technology to stably produce up to 204 ppi resolution. We are targeting 350 ppi and expand its product range from small and medium to large area to secure a variety of applications with ink-jet printing AMOLED. ”

<JOLED, Yoneharu Takubo CTO>

Ink-jet printing process is a technology under continuous development of major panel makers as AMOLED panel of RGB structure can be manufactured without dividing the ledger in the mass production line higher than Gen8. Also, material utilization efficiency is theoretically close to 100% to save the OLED unit cost. However, some issues arise that mass production has yet to be fully verified, and the efficiency and life span of soluble light emitting materials are inferior to those of deposition materials; hence, there has been undergoing active development in the manufacturers of light emitting materials, equipment and panels.

Ink-jet printing OLED becomes the center of public attention as a next-generation display technology, and when it will be commercialized is a matter of a question.

[Finetech Japan 2017] LG Display OLED, more than 50% of the total revenue in 2020

Softly bending OLED lighting like a paper, Development of Roll-to-Roll manufacturing technology

<Shin Kwon, Senior researcher of Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials (KIMM) & OLED production Roll-to-Roll production equipment, source: KIMM>

Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials (KIMM hereafter, Cheon-Hong Park, the president of KIMM), the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning-affiliated developed the 300mm grade of Roll-to-Roll manufacturing technology that allows to produce flexible OLED* by simple process with GJM Co., Ltd (Mun-Yong Lee, CEO) for the first time in Korea.

The Printed electronics research laboratory of advanced production equipment research center in KIMM succeeded in applying traditional Roll-to-Roll printed electronics technology to the OLED production process. Using Roll-to-Roll vacuum evaporation equipment, it is possible to produce flexible OLED products inside a single chamber as evaporating OLED light emitting organic layer and metallic electrode to roll type film in order. Available OLED products consist of many organic, inorganic layers of 1~hundreds nanometer (nm) level of thin and each layers are manufactured through vacuum thermal evaporation process.

Producing the flexible OLED display must go through complicated processes until now. The method that has been used so far is that attaching a film on the glass plate and passing it over the evaporation process to produce OLED, and then separating a film from the plate. The one-side curved display of smart phone screen which was launched by Korea conglomerate was made in the same manner of process which is attaching a film on a glass plate or coating and then circulating evaporation equipment to produce OLED and separating OLED from the glass plate. There were demerits of the need for adding additional process of attaching and detaching a film as well as for various additional evaporation equipment upon necessary steps.

Applying the currently developed technology, it is possible to produce OLED with ‘multi-layer evaporation’ process that evaporates organic layer and inorganic layer sequentially on top of a film after letting a roll type film which is rolled inside a vacuum chamber flow. The time and facilities required for production are greatly reduced, therefore, not only large companies but also small and medium-sized enterprises can produce flexible OLED.

This OLED producing method is expected to be used in the lighting industry first since it can be produced by surface unit unlike point unit of the existing LED, and be possibly made in any desired shape due to its flexibility.

Shin Kwon, senior researcher of KIMM explained “With Roll-to-Roll vacuum evaporation equipment, it can be used for continuous production of flexible OLED which is notable display for the next generation. Especially in the display industry, it is a key technology to secure the technology gap feasible to contribute to gain supremacy over China from its rapid pursuit while Korean R&D is stagnant.

Also added “we are under development of fine pattern mask align technology which allows to produce individual pixels Red/Green/Blue used in actual display product. When it’s completed, it can be applied to the high resolution display and is a strong technology differentiated from Fraunhofer in Germany and Konica Minolta in Japan developing similar technologies.

This task was conducted for the leading study sponsored by the ACE*** program which is a technical business support program of KIMM, and has been conducting with GJM Co., Ltd. with a support of the economic cooperation business of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy since Oct. 2015. GJM Co., Ltd. as a hidden champion holding core technology in OLED, recently made a delivery performance in Taiwan, Japan, and China and is pushing ahead with full-scale equipment commercialization.

The OLED Component and Material Market for Mobile Phones Is Expanding Rapidly

The component and material necessary for manufacturing OLED include not only board but also TFT, OLED, encapsulation, touch screen, cover window, and drive IC.

With the joining of Apple and Chinese companies into the OLED mobile phones market which has been led by Samsung’s Smartphone Galaxy, Samsung Display and Chinese Display companies are increasing their investment in Gen 6.

Accordingly, component and material market needed for manufacturing OLED is also rapidly expanding.

According to the UBI Research report, the OLED component and material market for mobile phones is expected to grow to US$ 38.2 billion in 2021 as against US$ 8.72 billion in 2017.

In terms of nation, the Korean OLED component and material market holds 94.9% market share(US$ 8.27 billion) in 2017, but the Chinese one is forecast to increase up to 22.3% in 2021, whereas the Korean one will decrease to 72.2%.

From bezel-less to full-screen, Full-screen smartphone’s era has come closer.

The area of display for a smartphone is getting wider.

The display area (hereinafter as D.A.) indicates the display size versus a set size. At the IMID 2016 business forum, the chief of Samsung Display, Park, Won-sang said that “The D.A. may be a core element to overcome the limit of its size through the portability of a smartphone.” and, “henceforth, the full-screen smartphone with more than 90% of D.A. will be released and take the lead the market.

<Samsung Display’s New Product>

The D.A. of an existing smartphone has been about 60-70%.

However, Samsung Electronics has enlarged D.A. over 75% by launching of Galaxy S7 Edge and Note 7 applied flexible AMOLED in 2016. Several companies in China have similarly started the enlargement of the D.A. through Nubia Z11 with 75.2% by ZTE and Mi Mix with 83.6% by Xiaomi.

As LG Electronics has applied full vision 5.7 inch QHD+ display by 18:9 at their G6, its D.A. reached to 80.4%. It was increased 0.4 inch compared to the former G5’s display size, but the bezel was decreased by 1mm from each side to side. It brings the enlargement about 10% of D.A. as a result.

Additionally, Galaxy S8 and iPhone S8(tentative name) planned to launch in 2017 will be more than 91% of D.A. according to reducing the bezel through up and down as well as side to side, since the models will not have a plan for the home button.

According to this, the smartphone market for full-screen maximized D.A. may lead a market trend for high-end smartphone, and the flexible AMOLED may be expected to take the market of full-screen smartphone forward.

Flexible AMOLED takes the high-flexibility through the plastic panel, it makes easy to realize the full-screen by arranging efficiently diverse modules to a smartphone.

By the “Key issue and Market Analysis for Foldable OLED” report published by Ubi Research in October, it looks forward that a smartphone with full-screen AMOLED type (a type which is minimized bezel area for up and down as well as side to side) will exceed the market share of OLED panel for bezel-less type as about 60% in 2020 from about 17% in 2017.

Who is the winner of premium TV set in 2017 between Samsung, LG and Sony?

Sony’s presale of XBR-A1E OLED TV series at CES 2017 early this year ignites a full-fledged competition in the premium TV market between Sony, LG and Samsung. Consumer’s attentions are drawn to this price war between existing versus new products and among major competitors.

Sony’s XBR-A1E series consists of three different size of models such as 55-inch at US $ 4,999.99, 65-inch at US $ 6,499.99 and 77-inch at a price remaining unknown, yet presumably twice as high as that of existing models XBR-55X850D and XBR-65X850D. This premium pricing strategy is interpreted as building up brand differentiation of the OLED TV equipped with better screen quality and acoustic surface technology. Compared to LG Signature OLED65G7P and OLED65W7P, the price is US$500 and US$ 1,500 lower respectively as it was launched later than LG, intending to dominate the market with a more competitive price.

LG electronics has also launched a premium OLED TV set last February; LG plans to launch 10 models (77/65W7, 77/65G7, 65/55E7, 65/55C7, 65/55B7) in five Ultra OLED TV series this year. The price of LG’s major model, OLED65C7 is US$ 4,499.00 on Amazon.com, 25% lower than OLED65C6 and a similar price to Samsung’s 65Q7C. But both the Signature OLED TV, OLED65G7P and the wall paper OLED TV, OLED65W7 are US$ 1,000 and US$ 2,000 higher respectively than Samsung’s most expensive 65” QLED TV, QN65Q9F. The premium market is divided by two categories of entry and high-end: low-priced entry model to compete with Samsung’ QLEDTV and premium-priced high end model to pioneer a niche market.

Unlike LG and Sony, Samsung has been focusing on QLED TV, launching super premium product lines (Q7,Q8,Q9) at the Louvre exhibition in Paris on March 14th The product lines consist of 11 models (88/75/65Q9F, 75/65/55Q8C, 75/65/55Q7F, 65/55Q7C) in 4series- the initial F means flat and C means curved. Q9 far more luxurious model than Q7and Q8 will be launched in April this year.

The price of 65Q8C will be US$ 4,799.99, and 65Q9F for US$ 5,999.99 as of March 14th at Best Buy, both of which are 20% higher than ‘SUHD TV’, one of premium TV line ups launched in 2016. Their high price range as Sony and better screen quality with 100% proved color volume are major attributes to establish luxury brand image of the premium TV set.

The premium TV market in 2017 is expecting a neck and neck competition again between the three major market leaders- Samsung, LG and Sony. LG, still the best market leader with OLED TV in the premium TV market versus Sony recently advanced in OLED TV market, and Samsung’s QLED TV marketing: How significantly would the three major players affect the premium TV market in 2017? That’s the focal point for consumers and stakeholders.

What is the future of OLED?

Choong Hoon Yi, president of UBI Research made a keynote speech with a theme “The Future of OLED” at ‘The 3rd OLED Korea Conference’ hosted by UBI Research for two days from March 8 to 9.

Choong Hoon Yi, president of UBI Research stated “100-inch rollable wall TV is the future of OLED”. “human eyes have a wide viewing angle so even if display covers the whole wall, there is no discomfort. Glass substrate OLED may be difficult to carry, and accordingly rollable display can be rolled up and delivered like a carpet.” he added.

He also predicted “plastic substrates and printing process for price cut will be suitable for rollable display. TFT and pixel production techniques made by Solution process will be a key to future technology”. If a speaker is built in rollable display, and a correspondence between the person and sound on the screen will represent a perfect display.

Choong Hoon Yi said the reasons for the success of OLED can be found out in the mobile market.
Firstly, 4K contents to be used for future TVs will be used in smartphones, and smartphones will also use 4K resolution.

Second, Apple will release the OLED iPhone this year, and there will be an Apple effect because Samsung Display is building the A3 line for Apple to produce 200 million 5.5-inch OLED displays.

Third, Chinese market accounts for 40% of the global smartphone market, and Chinese set companies have been rapidly increasing the release of smartphones.

Lastly, a flexible OLED to cover the full screen smartphone will have no home button and feature wide screen to satisfy visual functions, and its strengthened security system that reads fingerprint and pattern can be applied.

For the four reasons above, he expected OLED will be key in the future mobile market.

Meanwhile, he expected the shipments of OLED panel will be 1.7 billion in 2021, and the sales will amount to US$ 75 billion. Korean display companies will represent more than 80% of the total market in 2021, and China will take up 10~15%. In addition, he forecast that display panel companies will make a new investment in flexible OLED which will account for 70% of the total OLED market.

Visionox Announced OLED’s Own Innovative Technology is Flexible Display

Visionox’s principle researcher Li Lin gave a keynote speech with a theme “Development of Foldable AMOLED Display” at the 3rd OLED Korea Conference held for two days from March 8 to 9 by UBI Research.

Principle researcher Li Lin explained the development trend of flexible display, saying “Initial CRT was originally developed as an oscilloscope, but due to the development of full-color technology, it has been used commonly in our lives. LCD was also developed as a segment display, but due to the development of semiconductor technology, TFT black plane was applied to LCD so that LCD could be able to be used for smartphone and large-screen TV as well. The combination of the latest electronic technology and material technology enables display innovation, and the most innovative technology of OLED different from existing displays is a flexible display, Visionox is intensively developing now”.

In addition, he introduced the development history of Visionox’s flexible display, unveiled touch sensor 7-inch foldable AMOLED display that was developed in November 2016, and announced this module featuring 180° out-folding passed a folding test.

<Flexible AMOLED display with the touch-sensor featuring 180° out-folding, Source: Visionox.com>

He added that in order to develop foldable display, it is very essential to improve reliability of TFT, use durable materials such as strong OCA, scratch-resistant and durable cover window film, thinner circular polarizer layer, and panel-combined touch panel, and decrease module thickness.

Meanwhile, principle researcher Li Lin said “The mass production of Flexible OLED panel finally depends on the yield improvement. But, skills and experience for mass production are still insufficient.” Regarding the question about the development of circular polarizer layer, he answered “Reducing thickness is a key. And, we are considering the way to combine with another layer.” Lastly, regarding the development of Touch panel, “Among various technologies, especially on-cell technology is now under examination”, and regarding materials, “Metal mesh seems to be a good alternative, but there is no specific plan yet” he announced.

UDC Introduced Organic Vapor Jet Printing That Keeps the Life time and Efficiency of OLED Emitting Material

Mike Hack, vice president of UDC introduced solution process technology, OVJP (Organic Vapor Jet Printing) technology during the COLOR IS UNIVERSAL Session of “The 3rd OLED KOREA CONFERENCE” hosted by UBI Research.

Mike Hack emphasized “OVJP technology can still use OLED materials used for the deposition process unlike the existing ink-jet solution process, and FMM and solvent are unnecessary”.

Besides, he introduced UDC’s Novel BY Display Architecture. According to his announcement, this structure has increased the mask opening size for one-time 2 pixel deposition. Also, Novel BY Display Architecture features the alternate deposition of blue and yellow sub pixels instead of existing RGB, and red and green CF in half of yellow sub pixel is arranged in a vertical symmetrical fashion.

Mike Hack said “This structure maximized not only the fill factor of blue and yellow sub pixel but also the color reproduction rate, efficiency and life time of OLED panel”. He also mentioned it can reduce manufacturing costs due to the use of less than 3data per pixel and 2-step EML deposition(FMM).
Lastly, UDC closed its announcement adding that they aim at the development and commercialization of PH emitter and host.

Meanwhile, according to “Market Entry Analysis for Solution Process OLED” by UBI Research, the emitting material used for the ink-jet solution process employs a method of mixing various solvents in an emitting material used for the deposition process. It lowered the purity of a materials, thereby reducing emitting efficiency and life time. Despite this advantage, solution process can increase the usage efficiency of emitting materials without using color filter and manufacture large-screen OLED panels via RGB pixel structure without panel split through over Gen8 equipment. Due to this advantage, major panel companies are actively developing it and trying to achieve the preoccupancy of commercialization.

What is the key to successfully commercializing the Next Flexible OLED?

During the 3rd OLED KOREA CONFERENCE Samsung Display’s head researcher Taewoong Kim gave a keynote presentation on the topic of ‘Flexible Display: Application & Technical issue’

Head researcher Taewoong Kim emphasized that the 3 factors ‘Technical Breakthrough, New Application, and Strategic Partnership will be the key that successfully commercializes flexible OLED.

Head researcher Taewoong Kim mentioned that the first key for the successful Flexible OLED, Technical Breakthrough, has the four issues, improving durability of cover window and surface-coating of organic-inorganic materials, flexible electrode material and low resistance touch panel, decreased layer numbers and flexibility of encapsulation, and backplane which has low stress structure and demands a flexible and robust TFT material.

It was announced that the 2nd New Application needs an area expansion in Life & Health, transportation, wall display, loT, signage/PID, and education. Having the strength of design freedom, the Flexible AMOLED can be applied to various areas such as shoes, watches, glasses and the roll able which is an optimum display that is small and can maximize portability and materialize large screens. Even though the automotive has a long way to go due to lots of issues such as low life expectancy in harsh environments, it was emphasized that the AMOLED can create various applications.

Finally, head researcher Taewoong Kim emphasized and concluded with the win-win strategy through panel, material, equipment, and communication, collaboration, confidence between industry-university-institute was needed.

According to the ‘Key Issue and The Market Analysis for Foldable OLED’ by Ubiresearch, Samsung Electronics has successfully entered the smartphone market through design differentiation by using flexible OLED and is predicted that even several other set companies will actively use the flexible OLED to have competitiveness in the premium smartphone market. Following this, it is forecasted that the flexible AMOLED panel (including for smart watches) will grow to 1 billion in 2020.

CYNORA, what is its research and development goal from now on?

During the 3rd OLED KOREA CONFERENCE, Andreas Haldi of CYNORA presented the research result and future development direction with the topic on Efficient blue TADF emitter: material in high demand.

Andreas Haldi said that he did an in-depth anaylsis on the spectrum characteristic development of deep-blue TADF emitter classification and the interaction between host and guest. He revealed that the EQE (1000nits) of the deep-blue TADF emitter improved from 15% to 24% and life time (500nits) rose to 1000h from 300h.

However, it was mentioned that the efficiency and life time showed a decrease due to material quenching when applying the deep-blue TADF emitter to the OLED. He added that in order to resolve this problem, CYNORA is doing a joint development with a panel company and plans to reach a minimum of 0.2 for CIEy, above 15% for EQE(1000nits), more than 100h for LT97(700nits) by 2017, which is the aim for mass producing a mobile and TV deep-blue TADF emitter.

Developing ultra-definition display with a color filter technology

A color filter technology has been developed that can bring forward commercialization of next generation’s TVs with ultra-definition visibility and lower prices. The National Research Foundation of Korea (a chairman of the board, Moo-jae, Cho) announced that Prof. for Korea University, Byeong-kwon, Joo’s research team has developed a complementary plasmon color filter having sharp display and high resolution. The color filters which are currently used in the display industry mainly are optical absorption type using pigments or dyes. It has low chemical stability since it is based on organic materials and high unit cost due to manufacturing RGB filters separately. On the other hand, the optical interference type plasmon color filter using inorganic materials can simultaneously produce various color filters at low cost, but there is a problem that the color purity is in decline due to color interference occurring in the two-dimension array of nanostructures.

<Transmittance spectrum according to opening ratio of Hole pattern and dot pattern structures, Source: The National Research Foundation of Korea>

The research team applied a reversal approach to break out the existing pattern as complementary design method that combines dot pattern with hole pattern. It is a general viewpoint of academia that it is difficult to apply dot pattern to a transmission color filter in the form of reversing the existing hole pattern. However, the team assured that the extraction of high purity for red is possible through effective blocking the leakage of short wavelengths by dot pattern under certain conditions. The result is shown that the range of implementing color in the complementary designed plasmon color filter is widened over 30% than before.

<Plasmonic color filter of Hole pattern and Dot pattern structure produced, Source: The National Research Foundation of Korea>

In addition, the implementing of various color of the complementary plasmon color filters is available such as red, green, and blue by adjusting only the geometric parameters of the nanopattern. The performance can be improved without additional costs since the existing materials and manufacturing methods could be used as usual.

Prof. Byeong-kwon, Joo explained that “This research has developed a plasmon color filter with high color reproducibility through a complementary design method. This is expected to accelerate the development of the next-generation display combining nano-optic devices.”

The research results were performed by supporting of the Basic Research Support Project(private research) of the National Research Foundation of Korea at the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning, the Ministry of Education·BK21 support project of the National Research Foundation. It was published in the Scientific Reports affiliated journal of an international journal Nature, on January, 13th.

A self-driving car is a vehicle that is capable of sensing its environment and surroundings and driving along a planned path, and a connected car is a car that is usually connected with a network due to its convergence with IT technology. Apple’s CarPlay and Google’s Android Auto are representative.

An autonomous car currently under development puts more importance on the display that can provide necessary information in time because information is increasingly diversifying and complex. With the higher availability of interior space in the not partial but full self-driving age, the utilization of display that can support a driver’s various secondary activities is expected to increase.

In addition, as smart devices and network have advanced, a connected car is expected to use media contents streaming and various application services through display including in-vehicle CID(Center Information Display). And, it will be a connected device that connects a driver-car-house through display that provides wireless communication service and information.

Accordingly, many panel companies including LG Display are developing automotive displays, and automobile companies also try to apply different displays in order to differentiate from other companies and highlight merchantable quality. Especially, they are actively considering flexible displays because it is difficult to use the large area of flat displays with curved surface in cluster and CID, and therefore OLED display with good design availability is receiving attention.

AMOLED panel has the advantages of rapid response speed and high visibility based on wide viewing angle, high color reproduction rate and contrast range. And, its flexible design is so easy that it is applicable regardless of location, thereby attracting automobile companies. But, its short lifespan remains a current issue, and panel companies are carrying out development for performance improvement such as better lifespan, service temperature, and brightness.

<Market Share Forecast of Displays in the Automotive Display Market, 2017~2022>

Meanwhile, according to “Automotive Display Report – application & market trend analysis and the market forecast” published by UBI Research, OLED pane is expected to be applied to automotive cluster or CID beginning in 2018, and the automotive display market is likely to increase about 17% annually on average and will reach about US$ 25,000 million by 2022. Also, it forecasted that the AMOLED panel market will account for about 20% of the total sales.

Will Curved TV Disappear in the Premium TV Market?

The curved TV introduced firstly in 2013 has attracted attention for a long time, and many companies including Samsung Electronics and China’s Hisense, Haier and TCL showcased curved TVs at CES 2016. In addition, newcomers including Xiaomi and LeTV released curved TVs, and Samsung Electronics organized ‘Curved Federation’ with China’s TV companies such as Hisense and TCL in August, 2016 to cooperate with each other for the expansion of curved market, and the reviews on the curved TV market are generally positive.

But, only a few companies such as Korean and Chinese ones unveiled curved TVs at CES 2017, while other electronics companies in Europe and the US showcased flat TVs only. Meanwhile, LG Electronics said that it plan to release flat TVs only for Q9, a flagship TV model of 2017 but curved TVs for less expensive models Q7 and Q8. With its plan to focus on flat OLED TV in the future, pointing out the downward trend of curved TV market, LG plans to pay more attention to flat OLED TV. Likewise, major TV set companies’ awareness of curved TV started to change. Besides, European electronics company Vestel mentioned the disadvantage of curved TV that is too sensitive to viewing angle, and TV review company Reviewed.com and other review companies offered negative opinions on curved TV. This expects that the position of curved TVs is likely to dwindle in the premium TV market.

Accordingly, the premium TV market will have intense competition for the clear picture quality of flat type TVs, whereas curved TVs are expected to have competition with Chinese companies in a lower level TV market. As many Chinese TV makers have released curved TVs, curved TV in the premium TV market is no longer a competitive point. Therefore, TV set companies need to find a new turning point to catch the eyes of the consumers.

LG’s OLED TV is expected to surpass 15% among total TV sales this year

During the conference call that reported operating profits, LG Electronics announced on January 25 that OLED TVs accounted for below 5% of its total TV sales volume in 2015, but more than doubled in 2016 and achieved 10%. In addition, the share of LG’s OLED TV in the premium market over 2,000 dollars has rapidly increased, and it has solidified its leadership in the high-end OLED TV market. Therefore, LG said OLED TV sales are expected to rise and accordingly account for more than 15% of its total TV sales in 2017.

Also, LG Electronics’ sales reached 55.3660 trillion won, and its total operating profit last year was 1.3378 trillion won. The company’s annual sales dropped 2 percent from 2016(56.5090 trillion won), while its operating profits increased 12.2 percent from last year(1.1923 trillion won).

Especially, the sales of HE(Home Entertainment) division rose 0.2% from last year(17.3976 trillion won) thanks to an increased demand for TVs and premium TV sales. Despite rise in panel prices, LG reported a record operating profit of 1.2374 trillion won through its premium product sales and strategy to improve cost competitiveness.

Accordingly, LG Electronics announced it plans to continuously release premium TVs by adding such premium functions as IoT to existing products. It is also planning to expand its business focusing on the expansion of sales markets through globalization, going beyond its sales in Korea and USA.

Meanwhile, LG Electronics plans to start operating the E4 phase2 26K Gen8 OLED production line that it invested in 2016, in the second quarter this year. In addition, OLED TV price is expected to drop, and accordingly the OLED TV market is likely to increase significantly.

LG Display Invests 5 Trillion Won in OLED Business, including Plastic OLED

LG Display has decided to change its business portfolio to concentrate organic light-emitting diode (OLED) business. Through the conference call that reported operating profits in the fourth quarter of 2016, LG Display announced on January 24 that it plans to invest some 5 trillion won in facilities this year, and put investment in OLED including Gen6 Plastic OLED and large-size OLED manufacturing facilities. Especially, its investment in OLED is expected to rise to 70% by 20% in 2017, compared to last year with a plan to expand the OLED market.

LG Display Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Kim Sang-don said, “LG Display has reorganized its business structure by integrating previous 5 divisions into a total of 3 divisions such as TV, IT and mobile for its business efficiency.” “It will concentrate not only clear picture but also design and price in large-size LCD TV panels, while producing small and mid-size OLED panels focused on E-5 Gen6 POLED mobile and automotive business. Gen6 E-5 plants also plan to start producing POLED in the third quarter this year. Regarding new Capa, the sizes of new OLED will be 55”, 65” and 77”, and the Capa over 65″ is expected to rise more than 40% this year, a 10 % increase from 30% in 2016”.

Kim said, “the company has secured a total of 60,000 OLED TV capa in the second half of the year according to this year’s OLED TV forecast and yield improvement, and this is the capacity that can produce 1.5 million to 1.8 million televisions a year. Also, he emphasized “Our large-size OLED panel achieved the industry’s yield of 80 percent, which means OLED achieved its golden yield in just two years, compared to LCD’s golden yield of 10 years”.

Kim added “Regarding Chinese firms’ large-size LCD panel line extension that has become an issue recently, the production of Gen8.5 OLED and LCD is now available, but we still need to examine technology, production and productivity of over Gen10 panels. We will carefully consider the extension of the super large 60” 4K and 8K market. Also, LG Display’s middle and long-term strategy is to create a new OLED market so as to expand OLED.

With regard to the price comparison with LCD TV, “more than 60,000 capa is added this year through OLED line extension, and this is the capacity that can produce 1.5 million to 1.8 million televisions. It is a very small scale compared to the entire TV market size, and the price comparison with LCD is meaningless” according to him. LG Display announced that it plans to expand the OLED market for commercial purposes such as signage, broadcasting and medical use in 2007, while emphasizing the target of OLED TV is not the competition with LCD but only the high-end premium TV market.

Meanwhile, regarding the ownership of crystal sound that were unveiled at CES 2017 held in Las Vegas, USA, “In addition to LG DISPLAY’s crystal sound panel, its strategic partner Sony Entertainment Television (SET) improved sound through sound control and algorithm, and OLED panel’s quadrant sound control is LG DISPAY’s own technology” it said.

LG DISPLAY posted 7.9360 trillion won in sales and 904 billion won in operating profits in the fourth quarter last year, recording the black-ink balance for 19 consecutive quarters. Its net profits increased to 824.7 billion won, a whopping 335% increase from the previous quarter. 38 percent of sales in the fourth quarter came from displays for televisions; 31 percent from displays for mobile devices; 17 percent for laptops and tablets; and 14 percent for monitors. Due to the increase in panel prices and demands, its sales reached 26.5041 trillion won, and operating profit was 1.3114 trillion won, surpassing the 1 trillion won for a fourth straight year while keeping a positive trend in its profits.

In the meantime, UBI Research expected that LG Display will produce 1.5 million large-size OLED panels over 50-inch.

OLED TV, fiercely chasing SUHD TV Price

OLED TV price is being fallen continuously, and is fiercely chasing SUHD TV price. In Amazon (www.amazon.com), the price of 65inch 4k UHD OLED TV (OLED65B6), LG Electronic model of March 2016, was US$ 3,147 based on December 2016, and US$ 1,600 appeared to be dropped compared to US$ 4,747, price of July 2016. The price of 55inch 4k UHD OLED TV (OLED5B6) was US$ 2,097, and US$ 800 was fallen compared to US$ 2,897, the price of July 2016.

SUHD TV price of Samsung Electronics which was similar premium product series was US$ 1,648 in 65inch (UN65KS8000), and differences of US$1,499 turned up compared to same size UHD OLED TV of LG Electronics. Specially, US$ 966 difference appeared compared to same-size UHD OLED TV of LG Electronics as US$ 1,131 of 55inch (UN55KS8000), and the gap could been seen as being narrowed to below US$ 1,000.

<Price comparison of LG Electronics, LG Electronics 65inch, 55inch TV, Source: UBI Research>

If comparing price difference between UHD OLED TV based on 2016 65inch model and SUHD TV, about US$ price differences come out based on July 2016, a fact appeared such like OLED TV price was quickly narrowing price difference with SUHD TV price in 55inch and 65inch as well as difference of about US$ 1,500 based on December 2016.

On the other hand, LG Display is expected to really operate mass production line of E4 phase2 26K Gen8 OLED having been invested in 2016 from the 2nd quarter, and thus an estimation is made such like OLED TV price will be dropped further.

Besides, participating companies of OLED TV camp in CES 2017 were increased remarkably, and OLED TV market is being activated in trend because large manufacturer like Sony joined with several European companies especially, and thus it is expected that price drop of OLED TV will occupy advantageous position in competitions with LCD TV in premium TV market.

The image quality is enough, AMOLED for user’s eye health is general trend now.

Modern people who are exposed to electronic devices such as smart phones, PCs, TVs, and monitors can cause fatigue and dry eye syndrome by blue light which might damage the retina or lens in severe case. It may especially disturb a restful sleep by affecting melatonin negatively which is the secretion of sleep-inducing hormone.

Samsung Display has introduced the strength points of self-emitting AMOLED on the blog that can block the harmful blue light by emitting nearby safe wavelength to keep the color and reduce the emission of 425-455mm area in harmful wavelength. They have acquisitioned the industry’s first “Safety for Eyes” certification regarding on the excellence of eye’s health in the photobiological stability test conducted by German certification institute, VDE (Verband Deutscher Elektrotrchniker e.v) in 2016.

They have also represented various advantages that offer excellent color reproduction ratio of 100% against LCD showing 74% level of DCI-P3 standard, thinner thickness than half and low power consumption compared to LCD. They promoted variety merits of eco-friendly AMOLED only for user’s eye health (e.g., ‘Vision Aid’ checks itself the degree of deficiency of cone cell for color blind people and adjusts intentionally the insufficient color stronger for them to look well) as well as the performance including image quality by using blog.

Meanwhile, Samsung Display showed a Bio blue panel applied pixel structure with deep blue sub-pixel and light blue sub-pixel in SID 2016 and IMID 2016. Deep blue and light blue are applied to prevent the degradation of color expressiveness of AMOLED panels that are replaced by light blue only and sharply reduced the gravity of blue light on AMOLED to 12.8%, half of the 25.1% of LCD.

Expect to hit 1 trillion won in OLED emitting material market for 2017

The OLED emitting material market is expected to exceed 1 trillion won in 2017.

The OLED emitting material market grew by 15%, about US$ 650 million versus 2015 according to “OLED emitting material Report-2nd data spread sheet” of Ubi research and it expects to achieve about US$ 980 million that over 1 trillion won in terms of Korean currency in 2017.

A researcher of Ubi Research said, “Despite continued price declines of OLED emitting materials, the 15% growth of the OLED materials market has analyzed due to the increased operation ratio of Samsung Display and LG Display in 2016. The OLED emitting material market in 2017 will be sharply grow through in earnest operating of A3 line of Samsung Display and E4 line of LG Display invested in 2016.”

Additionally mentioned, “The OLED emitting materials companies should pay attention to the high operation ratio of OLED production lines in China in 2017. Although the quantities of consumed for OLED materials of current Chinese company are less, but, the investment in mass production lines for Gen6 flexible AMOLED panels is underway, and sales volume of AMOLED panel companies in China may expect to grow sharply in the OLED emitting materials market. Therefore, the OLED emitting material companies should concentrate sales business for China in order to grow.

As such, the competition among related companies is expected to intensify because the OLED emitting material market would be increasing sharply in 2017.

Meanwhile, according to the report on the major performance by company in 2016, Samsung SDI (including Novaled) ranked first, followed by Idemisu Kosan (Japan) and UDC (US).

[CES2017] LG Display, Successful Development of a Talking Display First in the World

LG Display completed the dream having been hoped from flat display, and opened the product firstly in private booth of CES2017.

In the time when LCD was begun to be settled as a representative runner of flat display, a lot of display engineers hoped to the display to which speakers were attached. However, the speaker and display could not be unified because speaker could affect influences to liquid crystal movement.

Nonetheless, such limitations of LCD were solved through OLED. Convergence which unifies display and speaker becomes to be completed by LG Display ultimately.

LG Display made the sound come out directly by attaching small-size speakers to panel backside. If using this type, the feeling of having the sound of actor when talking could be gotten.

As the panel is vibrated along with the speaker movement, small beads having been put on the panel were moved in a wave according to sound effects. If expressing reversely, the sound could be seen.
The talking Display to which anyone did not succeed becomes to be realized finally. The name of this Display is “Crystal Sound OLED.”

President Yeo Sang-deok having led Crystal Sound OLED development said a worry that impact to credibility on OLED panel would occur in the first developmental stage, but revealed a pride in that successful product development was made first in the world eventually. President Yeo did not hide joy in making best work in his life as top head of LG Display which led OLED TV development.

From this year, the position of President Yeo was changed to CMO from head of OLED business. He seems to lead OLED future of LG Display yet. President Yeo Sang-deok lighted up his ambition such like he would do his best to make OLED ecosystem more healthily and firmly as his future roles. President Yeo took charge of Chairperson of The Korean Information Display Association (KDIS) from 2017. Based on his various experiences of LCD, OLED development, it is expected that he will be a leader who puts together industry, academia, and research.

[CES2017] LG Electronics Press Conference and Exhibition Trend

LG Electronics having a virtual monopoly on the OLED TV market has mentioned at the CES2017 press conference that the new OLED TV in 2017 is “LG Signature OLED TV W”. The”W” means “Wallpaper TV”.

OLED TV W, which LG Electronics will sell this year, is only 2.57mm thin-unlike LCD TV, there is no back light. In recent years, LCD TVs use direct backlights to increase brightness, and these products are rather thicker.

In order to emphasize that OLED TV W is thin and relatively light enough to be attached on the wall. LG Electronics displays OLED TV W on the glass. The Dolby speakers are installed separately under TV.

LG Electronics’ exhibition hall is filled with more and more OLED TVs, and about 30% of the exhibition room is taken for OLED TVs.

The OLED TV domes such as IFA2016 occupied the last space of the exhibition hall and there was a room where the excellent image quality of OLED TV integrated with HDR technology was introduced.

In the center of the exhibition room, OLED TV W which was introduced at the press conference is being displayed.

As LG Electronics’ OLED TV shown at CES2017 was similar to that of IFA2016 last year, no technical or design-wise novelty was found.

[CES2017] The load of the TVs : Return of the king

Sony was just kept premium TV market because they were left behind by Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics in middle-price TV market and not released new products in low-price market also, although they have been dominated the TV market until 10 years ago. But, Sony has splendidly returned with OLED TV at CES2017.

TV business was the face of Sony due to having the strongest aspects in the TV market, they always were located at the main showroom as the center during CES and IFA. However, the TV business has been downsized due to years of deficits on it and the camera replaced the TV spot in CES2016 and IFA2016 last year. Many attendees at the show felt that Sony was into the process of falling out of the TV business and thought it would turn into a camera company.

Sony, however, declared that they will be a king once again in the TV market at CES2017. TV defeated the camera and took the middle of the entrance of the exhibition hall again. But this TV is not an LCD that Sony has ever sold, but an OLED TV.

Sony has unveiled its BRAVIA OLED adapted a 4K HDR process X1 on 77-inch and 65-inch Crystal Sound OLED panels which is directly developed by Sony and produced by LG Display.

There was different from the OLED TV seen so far. In short, it’s “WOW”. It can be described as the most beautiful and elegant TV in the world. It was not comparable to the existing BRAVIA LCD TV displayed next to it. That LCD TV has the highest image quality among LCD TVs by using Quantum dot technology. Nevertheless, these LCD TVs have fallen into low grades unlike those of newly introduced OLED TVs.

A Sony representative of the exhibition said that the points to decide the OLED TV business was due to the meeting with Sony’s desire for image quality, and that mass production has not been decided yet but it will be after the second quarter of this year.

So far, the OLED TV market has been dominated by LG Electronics under leading, but with the attending of Sony, the OLED TV market is expected to grow even further.

The premium TV market will be led by LG Electronics and Sony focused by OLED TVs.

OLED panel for automotive display to be applied from 2018/The core issue is for its life-time extension.

OLED panels are expected to be used in automotive displays joining to mobile devices and TVs.

It clearly revealed that the flexible OLEDs are becoming the flagship product for automotive display in CES2017 through the Chrysler’s conference as pre-event. (website: https://www.olednet.com/en/ces2017-media-day-chrysler-potal/)

According to the “Automotive Display Report – Application & Market Trend Analysis and the Market Forecast” published by Ubi Research, OLED panels are expected to be applied to automotive cluster and CID in earnest from 2018. It will be applied to premium cars first under flexibility and superiority of image quality.

Car manufacturers are attempting to differentiate themselves with the concepts of environmentally friendly, connected, smart, and autonomous driving, and thus the interface inside the vehicle is also changing. There might be a limit to the existing analogue methods since various information must be transmitted and processed especially, as developed connected, smart car, and autonomous vehicle.

Therefore, the role of display in automobiles is becoming increasingly important and the area of display is gradually widening. Especially, since the cluster and CID have many curved surfaces, it is difficult to apply a square display to a large area and accordingly, the importance of a flexible display is emphasized.

The automobile manufacturers show great interest to the AMOLED panel since it can provide high visibility to the drivers and it is flexible and applicable to any part of the automobile based on its fast response speed, wide viewing angle, high color reproduction rate and contrast range. It is under joint development with major panel makers.

However, there is a problem that the lifetime of the AMOLED panel is still insufficient for application to automobiles. According to the analyzing report, the lifetime of the AMOLED panel has met about 50% as compared to the requirements for the car display. The most important issue is securing lifetime for the AMOLED panel usage.

According to the report also, the automotive display market will grow at an annual average of about 17%, reaching US $ 25,000 million by 2022, and it forecasted that the AMOLED panel market will account for about 20%.

[CES2017] Media Day: Meeting of the Prestigious Automaker and the Great Display Manufacturer

Chrysler held an event to introduce its next-generation concept car “POTAL” at the Pre-CES 2017 show, Pre-CES2017Media Event.

Chrysler classified the space where humans will live in the future into three; family, job and vehicle, and named vehicles a “Third Space”. Future drivers can do a variety of activities inside vehicles thanks to autonomous driving.

The interior design of “POTAL” is very simply organized. The steering wheel is designed to have storage space in dashboard. The high-mount instrument panel display is positioned on the top of the dashboard to have high visibility. ‘Connected’ interface is applied between display and the surrounding environment including driving information. There is another display underneath the dashboard.

The displays on the interior front of “POTAL” prepared to open the new era of future vehicles consist of AMOLED. A ‘high-mount’ AMOLED display is flexible OLED, and a display underneath is a 12-inch glass AMOLED. Both displays are supplied by Samsung Display.

At many car shows, the concept cars with curved displays have been introduced so far, but this show might be the first time to exhibit flexible OLED directly.

Flexible OLED used for ‘POTAL’ is so reflective to minimize the loss of information against light coming in from the outside, and its background is black to have optimum visibility.

The prestigious automaker and the great OLED manufacturer meet and create a new technology.

Flexible OLED provided by the world’s best mobile display company, Samsung Display is not expected to be used in the f motor industry or a while. Apple will apply flexible OLED to iPhone in earnest, and Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. will also use flexible OLED entirely for the next-gen Galaxy S8. Accordingly, the on-going flexible OLED line also lacks a capacity to respond to the smartphone market. Samsung Display’s flexible OLED is expected to continue a shortage of supply until 2019 so that the world’s best luxurious instrument panel will be supplied by 2020.
