IoT Era – Smart interface focused on display

With the Google’s comments in 2015 that the new IoT era is coming, the 13th China International Display Conference started with the presentation of BOE, a large Chinese display company, with the topic of the era of smart interfaces to be developed in the future.

Randy Chen (BOE, Sales Marketing Executive) shared the overall IT market trend as the first presentation and delivered the BOE’s strategy within it. At the heart of the IOT industry, which is expected to account for around $ 10 trillion in 2050, smart interfaces that link 5G communications and electronics to displays will play a big role and emphasized 8K and flexible display as BOE’s survival strategy. For this, he announced that they are working to build the 8K Industry Alliance and continuing to invest in the production of flexible displays starting with Chendu’s G6 Flexible Line. OLED panels produced in the Chendu B7 line, which began operating in the second half of this year, will be supplied to a smartphone maker in Shenzhen and expected to be seen in the market early next year.

Next, Xiuqi Huang (GVO, Vice President) of Visionox, who first started producing OLEDs starting with PMOLED, mentioned the change of smartphone trend and said that a mobile device with a foldable and rollable type using a flexible panel will be introduced in the future. He said that the technological development is required not only in design but also in related equipment and materials and Visionox has also been actively developing its technology.

CSOT, which produces QD-LCDs together with Samsung Display, mentioned the development potential of QLED and OLED TV and said that it was spurring technological development and investment as a latecomer. Especially, it was developing large-area inkjet printing technology that has advantages of relatively high material utilization rate and price competitiveness, on the other hand, it shared the goal of developing a smartphone panel that minimizes Bezel.

Following the presentation of representative panel companies in China, Lee Choong-hoon of Ubi Research, a global OLED research company, forecasted the market size of the OLED market, which is already leading the small-medium-sized panel market and the premium TV panel market and discussed why OLEDs have grown rapidly as a next-generation display. Ubi Research, as an OLED professional research company, is suggesting directions for future growth of OLED based on years of data and research experience.

In current display industry, major global smartphone makers such as Apple, Samsung and Huawei already have plans to apply OLED to all flagship models and TV companies such as LG Electronics and Sony have also shown that OLED TVs can only succeed in the premium market. This is why we expect the development of various types of panels and various applications that maximize the advantages of OLED forward.

OLED TV, leading a new paradigm in the display market

‘2016 OLED accounting seminar was held by Ubi industrial research on Dec 2nd in the Small& Medium Enterprise Hall. Lee, ChungHoon, the president of Ubi industrial research said, “OLED is leading a new paradigm in the display market, advancing a perfect black color and fast response rate compared to LCD. Most LCD manufacturers have introduced QD-LCD with the enhanced color reproduction, compared to the existing LCD. However, OLED is also in the evolution of display technology ”

LG electronics set up dark light at the booth in CES 2016; but later in IFA 2016 it displayed OLED TV, brightening the booth to show the confidence in luminance of OLED TV. Via CES 2016 and IFA 2016 the luminance has been improved from 600 nits to 800 nits, and next year OLED TV with higher than 1,000 nits will be launched.

The president Lee said, “In the current TV market, the unit price of OLED panel is triple the price of LCD and QD-LCD is double. If LG display reduces the OLED panel price, LCD manufacturers will be threatened due to the competitive pricing and technology of OLED panel.”

LCD manufacturers need to prepare marketing strategy for QD-LCD to be distinguished from OLED. Certainly there has been a market interest increased in QLED which seems, however, to be at a very early development stage like an embryo in the product life cycle. The soluble OLED will be introduced in the market earlier than QLED, the development of which prospectively takes at least 10years.

The primary issues of OLED TV can be summarized in three elements-size, price and luminance. The current OLED TV size is mainly 55”, but it is important to form a market for 65” and larger. The investment in Gen 10 line is necessary but has not been well established yet. As far as the price is concerned, if the ink jet technique is implemented in a new production line the price can be significantly reduced. The luminance can also be improved by 3-stack and top emission structure.

The shipping amount in 2016 is 390million, and will reach 1.5billion in 2020 in prospect. Flexible OLED panel will lead the high-end market while a rigid OLED panel for the mid-end market. The revenue will grow from 17trillion in 2016 to 60trillion in 2020. The estimate can be accomplished if Chinese manufacturers such as BOE, Tianma and GVO successfully advance and continue to grow in the market.

The current OLED market is growing in the mobile-oriented market, however, since 2018 TV will be stably settled and well established in the future.

Possibility for market entry of Solution process OLED and QLED with new technology of large surface.

Currently in the market of premium TV, OLED TV and QD- LCD industries are highly competitive.

QD vision with Nanosis and SID 2016 and IFA 2016 also emphasized quality of TV with QD material included comparing quality of OLED TV. Against this, LG Display joined the completion by emphasizing quality of OLED TV as an ideal display for HDR with comparison between QD-LCD and OLED in IFA 2016 with from SID 2016,

In current large surfaced TV market, LCD TV is taking overwhelmingly large share in distributed market while OLED TV gradually is growing large share in premium market.

In looking into strategies of each industry, large surfaced OLED is developing solution process OLED in order to achieve broader market share with from premium model to distributed model. To overcome weakness compared to OLED, LCD TV industry progressively use QD material with the final goal of development of QLED technology

As a competition in premium TV market gradually extends to entire area of TV market, present condition and possibility of market entry with solution process OLED and QLED is one of major interest.

For this matter, there is seminar host by Ubi Industrial Research with the theme of “analysis in possibility of market entry with QLED and Solution process OLED” in Medium sized business center, Yeouido, October 14th and will be discussing present market industry of large surfaced TV and panel and also will be dealing with present condition and issue of QLED and Solution process OLED, and future possibility of market entry.

Choong-Hoon Lee, president of Ubi Industrial Research, will suggest future direction of OLED industry with analysis of present condition and possibility of market entry in OLED and QLED.

Sung-Jin Jung, head of department of Du Pont, will be discussing the timing of market entry of solution process OLED with the demonstration of soluble OLED material, the essential part of solution process OLED, including present trend and up to date developmental technique

Professor Chang-Hee Lee and senior researcher Ji-won Bang from Korean Institute of Ceramic Engineering and Technology(KICET) will be discussing about advantage and developmental issue of Quantum dot material and direction of future development.

The seminar attracts attention in terms of providing an opportunity to share and discuss regarding issue through media and exhibition with technological and market perspectives of Ubi Industrial Research and share opinions and future possibility.

[OLED summit 2016] HDR contents- OLED TV, most suitable

Movie companies in Hollywood has begun to produce HDR contents since 2015, and recently so have media contents companies. Consequently HDR-supporting 4K TV becomes a center of attention in the market.

HDR is being applied to Samsung SUHD TV and LG OLED TV, as well as most 4KTV companies.

HDR applicability will be a daunting challenge for a premium TV.
At OLED summit 2016 LG Display proudly announced that OLED TV is the best to express HDR contents among existing TV sets in the market.

<Senior researcher Yu, SahngJin at LG Display>

Yu, SahngJin, the senior researcher at LG Display screen quality development team said, “the most critical component to express HDR is peak highlight and the most frequent peak highlight size in the HDR screen is less than 1% window size. In case of more than 1% window size, the peak brightness of QD-LCD is over 1,200nit, higher than OLED TV, however if it is reduced to 1% or less the peak brightness of QD-LCD is drastically reduced and for the 0.01% window size, approximately 100nit merely. OLED TV can express consistent peak brightness over 500nit on average in a less than 10% window size. Say HDR contents expression range is 100. QD-LCD TV is equivalent to 40 while OLED TV, 60, 20% better quality than QD-LCD to express HDR contents.” Certainly OLED TV is most suitable for HDR.

At the demonstration of OLED TV and QD-LCDTV, OLED TV stressed on the best screen quality ever in the existing market with the crystal clear presentation of black and other colors plus wide visual angle-.

QD-LCDTV is also being developed to express various and rich colors on TV screen but there is a limit of non-emissive display in BLU, which therefore presumably cannot exceed LG OLED TV screen quality.

[OLED summit 2016]OLED TV vs. QLED TV, OLED TV black expression overpower

In OLED Summit 2016 being held in San Diego, USA, LG Display compared similar level of highest model 65-inch LG UHD OLED TV and 65-inch Curved QD-LCD TV, which it attracted many participants’ attention.

The specification of comparing models are as follow.

It presented in a way to compare various picture qualities of OLED TV and QD-LCD TV through various films and patterns such as normal TV program and movies.

LG Display personnel said, “OLED TV absolutely expresses black better than QD-LCD TV if OLED TV and QD-LCD TV set the mode that expresses white color 6500K which is the standard of UHD Alliance. Basically, the brightness of QD LCD TV is higher than OLED TV, but because the basis is LCD, it feels more distortion because of more white tone compared to the color of OLED TV. Also, OLED TV can almost express without distortion even in viewing angle, but the color is distorted in QD-LCD”, emphasizing better quality of OLED TV than QD-LCD TV.

< Comparisons of 65inch OLED TV(Left) and 65inch curved QD-LCD TV’s Black Expressiveness >

Comparing the two pictures similar to images of space show below at the exhibition, OLED TV shows individual stars accurately while QD-LCD TV presents the stars vaguely just to indicate them. In the aspects of viewing angle, OLED TV nearly didn’t have any left-right color changes but its changes were found in QD-LCD TV.

Previous SID2016’s Nanosis and QD vision, Samsung and Hisense emphasized that QD-LCD is better than OLED TV in IFA 2016, but in this OLED Summit 2016, LG Display showed that OLED TV is much more outstanding compared to QD-LCD TV.

Like this, the position between QD-LCD TV and OLED TV is becoming more competitive, and the industry has the interest in which type of TV will gain more of customer’s trust.
