LG Display Develops the World’s First 88-inch 8K OLED Display

LG Display announced on Jan. 1 that it has developed the world’s first 8K 88-inch OLED display with 33 million pixels, which is 16 times higher than FHD(1920 × 1080) and 4 times (7680 × 4320) higher than UHD(3840 × 2160).

This product is the largest and ultra high-definition premium product in the existing OLED TV lineup, and it was praised for making history by silencing some controversies that OLED might have a technical limit to produce high-definition, compared to LCD in the 8K era.

In general, as the resolution of a display increases, fine definition becomes possible because it can be displayed finely. On the other hand, as the size of pixel constituting a screen becomes smaller, the aperture ratio decreases so that luminance implementation becomes difficult.

OLED is a self-luminous display that emits light by itself. Since there is no luminance degradation due to the reduction of aperture ratio, it is easy to realize ultra HD 8K resolution. Furthermore, OLED is expected to continue to lead the ultra-large/ultra high-definition market, as LG Display secures its own technology that can realize up to 8K with its innovative process/design and compensation technology.

OLED can maintain its existing slim design even if the resolution is increased to 8K, but LCD may require additional backlight to achieve brightness, which would increase the weight and volume.

With current technology, it is possible to make an edge type that inserts backlight into the display bezel up to 4K for LCD, but for 8K, it is inevitable to apply a direct type which combines backlight to the back of panel in order to implement 4K equivalent brightness and definition, which makes it heavy and thick.

In contrast, a self-luminous display OLED will continue to lead the ultra high-definition market due to its thin and light product design advantage.

“LG Display’s success in the development of the world’s first 8K OLED display has initiatively prepared for the 8K era and proved the overwhelming technology of OLED.” “We will accelerate our research and development on OLED to provide differentiated products that the market and customers want.” said Kang In-byung, CTO of LG Display.

Meanwhile, LG Display is planning to showcase innovative products including 8K OLED in its special booth at the CES 2018 which will be held at the Las Vegas Convention Center from January 9 to 12, 2018.
