Fraunhofer FEP develops OLED microdisplays as high-precision optical fingerprint sensors

Reporter : Hana Oh(HanaOh@ubiresearch.com)

Fraunhofer FEP has been developing various application-specific OLED microdisplays based on OLED-on-silicon technology successfully for many years. This unique technology enables the high-precision integration of an OLED as light source on a microchip. Moreover this microchip can be designed with further sensor elements, e.g. photodiodes. By this, objects can be illuminated and at the same time the reflected light detected and analyzed. Such microdisplays can be integrated into interactive data eyeglasses as a “bi-directional microdisplay”: the tiny display projects the information for augmented-reality applications whereas the camera function detects the viewing direction – thus the content can be controlled by eye-movements.

The fingerprint sensor uses this bidirectional functionality of light-emission and –detection as well: the finger gets illuminated and the reflected light will be detected and analyzed.

Bernd Richter, deputy division manager for OLED microdisplays and sensors at Fraunhofer FEP explains: “We have used an extra-thin encapsulation for the chip of this fingerprint sensor. Thereby the distance between finger and image sensor has been minimized and the fingerprint can be captured excellently. Thus, an additional imaging optics is not necessary for this application.”

The first prototype has a native resolution of 1600 dpi – this is three times more than typically required by the FBI. This high spatial resolution enables the identification even of smallest sweat pores beside the typical papillary lines, which can be used to increase the security.

One of the most promising applications of this new kind of sensor is the user verification in mobile devices. Because of the particularly high resolution in comparison to the typically used capacitive fingerprint sensors these devices are much less vulnerable to so-called spoofing (the manipulation by “false fingers”).

Another nice side effect is the opportunity for using the active area as a normal display e.g. for branding, displaying logos or notifications.

In addition, OLED65G6P of OLED TV model in 2016 of LG’s got 86 points and OLED65E6P was followed as 85 points. OLED55E6P and OLED55B6P jointly received 83 points.

<Samsung Electronics’ QN65Q8C, Source: Consumer Reports>

QLED TV QN65Q8C of Samsung Electronics launched in this year gained 79 points. Consumer Reports explained that it is excellent in resolution, image quality, and sound quality, however there was black mark for the high price in spite of backlighting existence, limit of expression for black due to backlighting and cloud phenomenon. And Consumer Reports quoted the words of industry source that it would take more than three years for launching of true self-emitting QLED TV.

In the ‘Solution process OLED annual report’, UBi research expected that QLED deposition materials have issues on a short life-span compared to phosphorescence OLED deposition materials that are currently being commercialized, efficiency problem, development of eco-friendly devices, lack of infrastructure compared to OLED. In case of not establishing infrastructure and aggressive investment such as manpower recruitment and expansion of the development investment, the time of commercialization will be far from here.

LG Electronics concentrates on ‘product competitiveness not price competitiveness’ in the premium TV market

LG Electronics reported that they plan to focus on product competitiveness rather than price competitiveness in the premium TV market in future through the conference call in Q1 of 2017 which was held on 27th, April. During the Q&A session on ‘the sales strategy of OLED and premium TV’, Jin-ho, Ha, the director of HE (Home Entertainment) said that “we will continue to expand OLED position in the premium TV market and also in future what the competitiveness we need in the premium TV market is product competitiveness rather than price’s.”

The performance in Q1 of HE in LG Electronics was 4 trillion 3261 billion won of sales volume and 3822 billion won of sales profit. It has been reduced 4600 billion won versus previous quarter under the influence of off-season. Nonetheless, YOY (Year on Year) has been kept at the same level. The sales volume was grown up in the area of North America, South Korea and Latin America for the reason of sales expansion of premium TV, though the market in Asia was decreased versus QoQ for the lack of sufficient demand.

Jin-ho, Ha, the director of HE in LG Electronics said that “We improved the profitability versus previous quarter by expansion of premium product sales, improvement of cost structure and flexible management for the panel price rise.” He also expected that the stagnant demand in whole TV market would be continued, but the demand would be increased in the area of North America, Latin America and Asia where are holding relatively high sales ratio.” In addition, “We would maintain sound profit structure and strengthen premium position by diverse global launching of products which leads the market such as ‘LG Signature OLED TV W’.”

He answered the questioning of in future panel price expectation and OLED TV line-up idea, “The panel has been significantly rising from in Q4 of 2016, and it has reached up over 60% versus June where is the lowest point last year”, and “We will design completive line-up composed of ‘premium, best, middle and low’ to aim the premium market within OLED TV group.”

For the question of the strategy in TV market in future, “In present which panel cost is increasing, we would operate the strategy based on the profitability by avoiding a simple volume competition, and we think that the market share in low price TV market is not meaningful. So that we plan to go forward the improvement of quality as a response based on the premium TV market having over 2000~2500 dollars.”

The strategy in TV market of LG Electronics announced at the conference call in Q1 2017 is consistent development of premium TV lineup which brings better profitability with high value-added product. They also expressed that will firmly build their position in the premium TV market with product competitiveness by image quality and technology rather than price competitiveness related to panel price.

Samsung Electronics, OLED catches 60% of whole display sales

Myeong-jin, Lee, the executive director of IR in Samsung Electronics announced that “sales volume in Q1 was recorded as 50.5 trillion won.” in the conference call of Q1, 2017 which was held on 27th, April. And “Samsung Electronics recorded 7 trillion 2900 billion won at the display area among total sales volume in the first quarter and the sales profit was 1 trillion 3000 billion won. OLED volume occupied over 60% in the total display sales volume in Q1 of Samsung Electronics.”

Chang-hoon, Lee, the director of Samsung Display expected that “The employment of OLED panel from set manufacturers in Q2 would be consistently increasing and Samsung Electronics will maintain stable performance with response for external customers and supply flexible products to core customers.” As an expectation of OLED market in 2017, it forecasts sales growth compared to previous year by expansion of flexible product supply, however there are risks due to intensifying competition of LTPS-LCD within middle-low price market.”

Yoon, Lee, the director of image-strategy marketing team, expected that “the performance in Q1 of TV market has been decreased versus previous quarter due to off-season after peak at the end of the year, and it would show degrowth compared to previous year’s same quarter for the influence of reduced demand in the area of Europe and Latin America.” Furthermore, “It expected the performance in Q2 in TV market would slightly grow versus previous quarter as accelerating the launching of new product by company, but it will show degrowth compared to previous year’s same quarter for the effect of reduced consumption in Europe.” He also expressed that they intend to concentrate on profitability by expansion of high value-added product lineup with curved and extra-large TV along with complete sales of quantum dot QLED TV products.

During the following Q&A session, at the response of inquiry of whole OLED production line in future, “LCD 7-1 line is under switching to OLED production line from the end of 2016 and OLED A3 line is in line with plan. The investment of OLED will be progressed according to customer’s needs in the future market.”

The answer for responding question of the OLED TV, “QLED TV overcomes shortcomings of OLED TV, and it is a perfectly different product for design, image quality, and life-style of consumers with the world’s first and metal-added quantum dot material. We ended the disputes over image quality by implementing 100% color volume which maintains own color without any influence by brightness.”

For a question of delay for part supply of Galaxy S8 and S8+, “We are trying to prevent problems for the initial supply through pre-contract with involved companies and it is smoothly progressing without any difficulties. Other parts will be also supplied without any troubles through dualized operation.”

At the last question for the OLED TV development of Samsung Electronics, “We are developing a diverse technology to apply for the TV as well as OLED and now, we are concentrating upon technology development for the next generation including Quantum dot. We will strengthen the market control at the field of differentiating products, extra-large and high value-added products through a diverse new technology as well as OLED TV and catch the securement of profitability.”

Merck, EU Horizon 2020 project ‘HyperOLED’ launched

Merck, a leading science and technology company, announced the successful launch of the HyperOLED project in April 12, a € 4million project funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program. Within the scope of this project, Merck, as the project coordinator, will be in close collaboration with an excellent consortium of four European partners: Microoled (France), Fraunhofer-IOF (Germany), Durham University (UK) and Intelligentsia Consultants (Luxembourg). Over a three-year period, the HyperOLED project will develop materials and device architectures for high-performance, hyperfluorescent organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) for use in display applications and solid state lighting.

The main objective of the HyperOLED project is to develop innovative high performance OLEDs by combining thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) molecular hosts with novel, specifically adapted shielded fluorescence emitters. The HyperOLED project will directly contribute to the development of thin, organic and large area Electronics (TOLAE), which is an emerging technology with high growth potential. The project will help to create reliable TOLAE-enabled devices with increased functionality, improved performance and longer lifetimes.

The new OLEDs promise to be more cost-efficient to manufacture because they are based on white OLED stacks that are easier to produce compared to current solutions. By reducing the number of layers in the OLED stacks, around 20-40% of organic materials can be saved, tact times can be reduced and less manufacturing equipment will be required. This will lead to considerable savings throughout the whole value chain, including solvents, educts, catalysts in material synthesis, energy saving in purification by sublimation as well as energy saving in OLED production.

Furthermore, thanks to the special properties of TADF molecular hosts and novel shielded fluorescence emitters, the improvement in OLED performance is expected to eliminate the need for expensive and rare metals (e.g. iridium and platinum), creating additional environmental and cost-saving impacts.

With the broad expertise of the consortium spanning the development and production of hyperfluorescence OLEDs, the HyperOLED project will directly target high-growth potential applications. Overall, this project is expected to stimulate exciting new business opportunities and economic output for Europe and beyond.

Is Samsung Display Moving To the Gen 7 for A4 Line?

Samsung Display’s ongoing extension of flexible OLED line is highly expected to move to the gen 7 production line.

An OLED specialized research company, UBI Research CEO Choong Hoon Yi(senior analysis) analyzed the names of Samsung Display’s plants have changed by generation so A4 line will be able to increase to the gen 7.

The OLED plants owned by Samsung Display consist of A1, A2, and A3. A1 line is the gen 4 plant, A2 is the gen 5.5, and A3 is the gen 6 plant. LCD’s 7-1 line that is being recently converted is reportedly named A3E which is the follow-up of A3.

Therefore, the CEO Choong Hoon Yi forecast A4 will become the gen 7 line, in light of this trend.

To this end, he looks squarely at some issues to overcome. Firstly, it needs to secure excimer laser, the prerequisite for LTPS-TFT and doping apparatus because production equipment still remains the gen 6. But, Yi thought there is no problem in securing equipment and developing process up to the gen 7, as Samsung Display has been operating the gen 8 LTPS-TFT to produce 55-inch OLED panels for TV.

In addition, he analyzed it would be also possible to manufacture the FMM of the gen 7 half, required for the OLED deposition process. Samsung Display’s sole supplier of FMM, DNP made an investment in manufacturing facilities last year. Although the details of investment haven’t been well-known, it already has a stepper that can manufacture a mask of gen 7 half.

Lastly, when it comes to the validity of investment in Samsung Display’s gen 7, a differentiated production strategy is a key issue, according to Yi. Recently, companies that got into the business late are investing in the gen 6 OLED line, and in a few years their equipment productivity will be as good as Samsung Display’s. In his point of view, it is very meaningful to invest in the gen 7 line in order to stand out from new comers once again.

Samsung Display is already building various portfolios such as foldable OLED, COP(chip on plastic)OLED, and OLED with 800ppi high-resolution even at the R&D stage. The addition of the gen 7 production strategy to its R&D strategy incomparable with late comers will further raise its competitiveness.

Automaker’s fierce competition for pre-occupying OLED for automobiles

In 2017, automakers are fiercely competing to pre-occupy OLED displays and lighting for automobiles. OLED display has good visibility and possible to design a curved surface, so it has advantages of design differentiation. Lighting is not irritating to the eyes and the surface emission is possible so that the frequency of adoption of OLED is expected to increase even more.

HYUNDAI Mobis actively promoted curved OLED for brand differentiation at 2017 Seoul Motor Show held in Ilsan KINTEX from March 31 to April 9. HYUNDAI Mobis official said “the display has a 12.3-inch flexible OLED with advantages of true black and fast response at all temperatures” also revealed “this product is under development for mass production in 2020 for cluster or CID”.

In addition, Audi Japan announced on March 28 that it decided to officially launch a small sports car “TT” applied an OLED tail lamp on some motels from mid of May. This is the first time that Audi has applied OLED tail lamps to mass-produced vehicles, allowed it to be optionally mounted on TT’s top models, the TT RS Coupe and TT RS Roadster. According to Audi Japan corporate, the option price is about 120,000 yen. The tail lamps commercialized by Audi this time are made up of 4 OLED panels and are known to have thicknesses of 1 to 2 mm per panel. Total 4 light-emitting areas are 49cm2 and brightness is 1000cd/m2, and German OSRAM supplies OLED panel.

As such, the number of cars using OLED displays and lighting is increasing. According to “2017 Automotive Display Report – Application & Market Trend Analysis and The Market Forecast” published by UBI Research, market research company, demand for displays for automobiles is projected to grow at a CAGR(compound annual growth rate) of 17% from 2017 to 2022, reaching US $ 25,000 million by 2022. Also, OLED displays for automobiles are expected to grow rapidly from 2018 to 2022, reaching US $ 5 million in 2022, accounting for about 20% of the total automotive display market.

Hyun Jun Jang, senior researcher of UBI Research, mentioned that “OLED has the advantage of providing various convenience to the driver such as infinite contrast ratio and fast response speed above all, it can be applied in various forms inside and outside the car based on the flexibility so that it can be a great merit for premium cars that emphasize design and differentiation.”

Researchers from Korea’s ETRI Institute developed a graphene transparent electrode for OLED display. Especially, they developed the process of patterning a graphene transparent electrode in exact size and shape on a large-sized substrate. Its application to smart watch requiring flexibility will be available.

ETRI(Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute) has succeeded in developing a display with the electrode using graphene, a dream new-material, rather than using ITO(Indium Tin Oxide) that has been often used as existing electrodes for OLED display.

The successful display substrate is the current world’s largest one of 370mm x 470mm, a 19-inch monitor in size. The thickness of graphene electrodes is less than 5nm.

ETRI expects that if the graphene is deposited on flexible substrate, thin and flexible display will be feasible. Furthermore, it will become the source technology that can be used for manufacturing wearable devices applicable to clothing or skin.

In general, OLED is stacked with substrate, ITO transparent electrode, light-emitting organic layer, and anodized aluminum. The researches replaced typical ITO with grapheme.

In particular, ITO that has been used as existing electrode has a disadvantage of being made of fragile glass. Therefore, the display manufactured with this technology will clear up the problem of fragile transparent electrode.

ETRI developed graphene growth technology and oxide technology to be applied as an OLED transparent electrode by making a large-scale substrate in collaboration with Hanwha Techwin Co.,Ltd, and secured the grapheme transparent electrode fabricating and process technology with the sheet resistance of 60Ω/m² and the transmittance of 85% applicable to OLED. Especially, ETRI developed the world’s first micro-patterning process that is absolutely required for the display process.

Using this technology, ETRI successfully lighted the world’s largest grapheme electrode OLED panel of 370mm x 470mm. The finding of this study, which was published and demonstrated at 『Graphene 2017』, the world’s largest graphene conference held in Barcelona, Spain in early April, 2016, was highly acclaimed.

The researchers started to research grapheme transparent electrodes for OLED, based on the 4-year support of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy(MOTIE) and Korea Evaluation Institute of Industrial Technology(KEIT) from 2012. They successfully developed a 100mm x 100mm OLED panel last year through the recent world’s largest demonstration, starting with a 7mm x 10mm coin-sized one, at the end of 2015, leading to the higher applicability of a grapheme-based display.

They said they will develop the display with a plastic substrate instead of a glass substrate. It is possible to manufacture a wearable OLED device if grapene is attached to plastic substrate, ETRI added.

ETRI’s Flexible Device Research Head Cho, Nam-sung said “The realization of a general expectation that grapheme would be applied to OLED display is very significant. We expect it will be successfully deployed on an commercial scale through large-scale grapheme film, OLED panel technology, and flexible OLED panel technology.”

This technology is expected to edge ahead from the later competitors including China as the core technology that can further increase the level of flexible OLED displays.

[Finetech Japan 2017] V-technology, Disclosure of FHM, feasible UHD of 738ppi

Reporter : Hana Oh(HanaOh@ubiresearch.com)

V-technology has released of FHM(Fine Hybrid Mask) which can realize UHD of 738ppi in Finetech Japan 2017 held on 5th.

The existing FMM is made by braiding and welding. However, this method is not only difficult to manufacture, but also has difficulty in realizing a high resolution due to the structural limitations of mask such as pattern (hole) and deflection due to its own weight.

In Finetech Japan 2015, V-technology had released the concept of FMM which had improved these disadvantages. Two years later, however, it has released mass-producible a prototype of FHM (Fine Hybrid Mask) beyond the concept in 2017.

<Non-tension structured fine hybrid mask of V-technology>

FHM of V-technology adopted a different electroforming and non-tension structure than the existing FMM manufacturing method. The person concerned mentioned that this reduced the weight of the FMM to 1/10 level of that of the existing one, and solved the problem of the mask bending due to its own weight and shadow interference caused by it. Also, added that by changing the manufacturing process, the accuracy of the FMM could be increased and enabled a 738ppi UHD implementation.

V-technology has introduced the concept of Vertical deposition system which can utilize FHM in addition to FHM. This system can transport the glass substrate and FHM vertically, simultaneous deposition is possible by putting up to 2 pieces of glass substrate and FHM respectively.

Also, a V-technology official noted that the vertical deposition system reduced the spacing between source and FHM and improved step coverage and uniformity degradation due to diffuse light, and said that yield improvement is possible since it is difficult to attach the particles to the FHM or glass substrate due to the vertical type of deposition equipment.

Recently, consumers’ needs for high resolution is increasing, and as the industry is actively moving to meet this demand, attention on how FHM of V-technology will work as a solution is paid for future moves.

Capture the Rapidly Emerging OLED Parts & Materials Market

With the joining of Apple in the growing OLED market this year which is manufactured by Samsung Display and applied in Samsung Electronics’ Galaxy, the OLED parts & materials market is increasingly developing.

An OLED specialized research company, UBI Research CEO Choong Hoon Yi(senior analysis) said the various parts & materials market needed for manufacturing smartphone OLED is expected to reach US$ 8.7billion this year and more than quadruple to US$ 38billion in 2021.

<M2017 Mobile Phone OLED Parts & Materials Report, UBI Research>

The biggest reason for the rapid growth in the smartphone OLED parts & materials market is attributed to the stable success of Samsung’s Galaxy, the Apple’s effect, the Chinese set companies’ demand boom. Just like reflecting this trend, leading display companies such as LG Display, BOE, CSOT, and Visionox following Samsung Display are struggling to introduce the 6th generation flexible OLED manufacturing line. This trend will lead LCD to disappear almost in the smartphone market by 2021.

<2017 Mobile Phone OLED Parts & Materials Report, UBI Research>

As the OLED parts & materials market for smartphone is classified by country, the Korean market predominates. The Korean OLED parts & materials market accounts for 95% of the total market and is likely to keep 72% in 2021.

As the OLED industry is led by Samsung Display, the Korean parts & materials market is also expected to rapidly grow. UBI Research CEO Choong Hoon Yi forecasted the ecosystem made by Samsung Display is held by the majority of Korean SMEs or the foreign companies with a factory in Korea, OLED growth will be directly related to the development of Korean SMEs.

Ink-jet printing OLED, Next-generation large-area display

Ink-jet printing OLED is attracting public attention once again as a next-generation large-area display.

At the keynote session of Finetech Japan 2017 held at Tokyo Big Sight as from May 5, CSOT in China prospected that next-generation large-area display would be ink-jet printing. York Zhao, the CTO of CSOT said that when the price of a new product is 1.2 to 1.3 times that of an existing product, it is the right time for the existing product to be replaced with new one. This principle has been applied when the CRT and PDP market was replaced by LCD. He added, “The price of large-area OLEDs should drop 1.2 to 1.3 times lower than LCDs to lead to a full-fledged OLED era, and ink-jet printing technology is the best way to assist the drop in price of OLED.”

<CSOT, York Zhao CTO>

In 2016, CSOT established the printing display alliance called “Guangdong Juhua printing display technology” together with Tianma, and has been participated by kateeva, DuPont, ULVAC, Merck and Jusung Engeering.

Following the announcement of CSOT, JOLED introduced various OLED panels in direct application of ink-jet printing. One of the most interesting devices was the ink-jet printing 21.6 inch 4K (3840 x 2160, 204 ppi) AMOLED panel produced in Gen 4.5 line. Yoneharu Takubo, the CTO of JDI said, “Since the establishment of JOLED, we have been improving ppi, and developed a technology to stably produce up to 204 ppi resolution. We are targeting 350 ppi and expand its product range from small and medium to large area to secure a variety of applications with ink-jet printing AMOLED. ”

<JOLED, Yoneharu Takubo CTO>

Ink-jet printing process is a technology under continuous development of major panel makers as AMOLED panel of RGB structure can be manufactured without dividing the ledger in the mass production line higher than Gen8. Also, material utilization efficiency is theoretically close to 100% to save the OLED unit cost. However, some issues arise that mass production has yet to be fully verified, and the efficiency and life span of soluble light emitting materials are inferior to those of deposition materials; hence, there has been undergoing active development in the manufacturers of light emitting materials, equipment and panels.

Ink-jet printing OLED becomes the center of public attention as a next-generation display technology, and when it will be commercialized is a matter of a question.

[Finetech Japan 2017] LG Display OLED, more than 50% of the total revenue in 2020

Softly bending OLED lighting like a paper, Development of Roll-to-Roll manufacturing technology

<Shin Kwon, Senior researcher of Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials (KIMM) & OLED production Roll-to-Roll production equipment, source: KIMM>

Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials (KIMM hereafter, Cheon-Hong Park, the president of KIMM), the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning-affiliated developed the 300mm grade of Roll-to-Roll manufacturing technology that allows to produce flexible OLED* by simple process with GJM Co., Ltd (Mun-Yong Lee, CEO) for the first time in Korea.

The Printed electronics research laboratory of advanced production equipment research center in KIMM succeeded in applying traditional Roll-to-Roll printed electronics technology to the OLED production process. Using Roll-to-Roll vacuum evaporation equipment, it is possible to produce flexible OLED products inside a single chamber as evaporating OLED light emitting organic layer and metallic electrode to roll type film in order. Available OLED products consist of many organic, inorganic layers of 1~hundreds nanometer (nm) level of thin and each layers are manufactured through vacuum thermal evaporation process.

Producing the flexible OLED display must go through complicated processes until now. The method that has been used so far is that attaching a film on the glass plate and passing it over the evaporation process to produce OLED, and then separating a film from the plate. The one-side curved display of smart phone screen which was launched by Korea conglomerate was made in the same manner of process which is attaching a film on a glass plate or coating and then circulating evaporation equipment to produce OLED and separating OLED from the glass plate. There were demerits of the need for adding additional process of attaching and detaching a film as well as for various additional evaporation equipment upon necessary steps.

Applying the currently developed technology, it is possible to produce OLED with ‘multi-layer evaporation’ process that evaporates organic layer and inorganic layer sequentially on top of a film after letting a roll type film which is rolled inside a vacuum chamber flow. The time and facilities required for production are greatly reduced, therefore, not only large companies but also small and medium-sized enterprises can produce flexible OLED.

This OLED producing method is expected to be used in the lighting industry first since it can be produced by surface unit unlike point unit of the existing LED, and be possibly made in any desired shape due to its flexibility.

Shin Kwon, senior researcher of KIMM explained “With Roll-to-Roll vacuum evaporation equipment, it can be used for continuous production of flexible OLED which is notable display for the next generation. Especially in the display industry, it is a key technology to secure the technology gap feasible to contribute to gain supremacy over China from its rapid pursuit while Korean R&D is stagnant.

Also added “we are under development of fine pattern mask align technology which allows to produce individual pixels Red/Green/Blue used in actual display product. When it’s completed, it can be applied to the high resolution display and is a strong technology differentiated from Fraunhofer in Germany and Konica Minolta in Japan developing similar technologies.

This task was conducted for the leading study sponsored by the ACE*** program which is a technical business support program of KIMM, and has been conducting with GJM Co., Ltd. with a support of the economic cooperation business of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy since Oct. 2015. GJM Co., Ltd. as a hidden champion holding core technology in OLED, recently made a delivery performance in Taiwan, Japan, and China and is pushing ahead with full-scale equipment commercialization.

Galaxy S8, 83.6% Display area implementation, 11.5% improvement over the previous model

<Samsung Galaxy S8, Source: Samsung Electronics>

Samsung Electronics’ Galaxy S8 and S8 + were unveiled on March 29th (local time) at the UnPacked 2017 event in New York, United States. No doubt Galaxy S8 ans S8+ have received a lot of attention before the event.
Size-wise of the Galaxy S8 is not much different from the previous Galaxy S7. But the Galaxy S8 minimizes the bezel and removes the home button for the wider display. This way, Samsung Electronics meets consumers’ needs, offering stability of using a smart phone with one hand as well as high visibility.
The Infinity Display applies to the Galaxy S8 accounts for 83.6% of smartphones. The size of display has enlarged by 0.7 inches while the display area (the ratio of display to smart phone) has been increased by 11.5%. Additionally, Samsung applied black color and edge shape to bezel, causing an optical illusion with far wider view to consumers as if the entire smartphone solely composes of a display set.
Samsung has also expanded the screen ratio of the Galaxy S8 from 16: 9 to 18.5: 9 to immerse consumers maximally in virtual experience while viewing an image on the screen. In some cases, 16: 9 image contents are produced in 21: 9 (for a wide view) and have been gradually increased. Such contents on the smartphone may cause the users to feel confined and distracted by the top and bottom margin. However, the Infinite display fills the screen with full 21: 9 image contents to further enhance the mesmeric feel.

Resolution of Infinite display has been upgraded from QHD to QHD + as good as the screen ratio; Infinite Display has been certified as the first HDR premium for the first time in mobile devices.

The OLED Component and Material Market for Mobile Phones Is Expanding Rapidly

The component and material necessary for manufacturing OLED include not only board but also TFT, OLED, encapsulation, touch screen, cover window, and drive IC.

With the joining of Apple and Chinese companies into the OLED mobile phones market which has been led by Samsung’s Smartphone Galaxy, Samsung Display and Chinese Display companies are increasing their investment in Gen 6.

Accordingly, component and material market needed for manufacturing OLED is also rapidly expanding.

According to the UBI Research report, the OLED component and material market for mobile phones is expected to grow to US$ 38.2 billion in 2021 as against US$ 8.72 billion in 2017.

In terms of nation, the Korean OLED component and material market holds 94.9% market share(US$ 8.27 billion) in 2017, but the Chinese one is forecast to increase up to 22.3% in 2021, whereas the Korean one will decrease to 72.2%.

From bezel-less to full-screen, Full-screen smartphone’s era has come closer.

The area of display for a smartphone is getting wider.

The display area (hereinafter as D.A.) indicates the display size versus a set size. At the IMID 2016 business forum, the chief of Samsung Display, Park, Won-sang said that “The D.A. may be a core element to overcome the limit of its size through the portability of a smartphone.” and, “henceforth, the full-screen smartphone with more than 90% of D.A. will be released and take the lead the market.

<Samsung Display’s New Product>

The D.A. of an existing smartphone has been about 60-70%.

However, Samsung Electronics has enlarged D.A. over 75% by launching of Galaxy S7 Edge and Note 7 applied flexible AMOLED in 2016. Several companies in China have similarly started the enlargement of the D.A. through Nubia Z11 with 75.2% by ZTE and Mi Mix with 83.6% by Xiaomi.

As LG Electronics has applied full vision 5.7 inch QHD+ display by 18:9 at their G6, its D.A. reached to 80.4%. It was increased 0.4 inch compared to the former G5’s display size, but the bezel was decreased by 1mm from each side to side. It brings the enlargement about 10% of D.A. as a result.

Additionally, Galaxy S8 and iPhone S8(tentative name) planned to launch in 2017 will be more than 91% of D.A. according to reducing the bezel through up and down as well as side to side, since the models will not have a plan for the home button.

According to this, the smartphone market for full-screen maximized D.A. may lead a market trend for high-end smartphone, and the flexible AMOLED may be expected to take the market of full-screen smartphone forward.

Flexible AMOLED takes the high-flexibility through the plastic panel, it makes easy to realize the full-screen by arranging efficiently diverse modules to a smartphone.

By the “Key issue and Market Analysis for Foldable OLED” report published by Ubi Research in October, it looks forward that a smartphone with full-screen AMOLED type (a type which is minimized bezel area for up and down as well as side to side) will exceed the market share of OLED panel for bezel-less type as about 60% in 2020 from about 17% in 2017.

Who is the winner of premium TV set in 2017 between Samsung, LG and Sony?

Sony’s presale of XBR-A1E OLED TV series at CES 2017 early this year ignites a full-fledged competition in the premium TV market between Sony, LG and Samsung. Consumer’s attentions are drawn to this price war between existing versus new products and among major competitors.

Sony’s XBR-A1E series consists of three different size of models such as 55-inch at US $ 4,999.99, 65-inch at US $ 6,499.99 and 77-inch at a price remaining unknown, yet presumably twice as high as that of existing models XBR-55X850D and XBR-65X850D. This premium pricing strategy is interpreted as building up brand differentiation of the OLED TV equipped with better screen quality and acoustic surface technology. Compared to LG Signature OLED65G7P and OLED65W7P, the price is US$500 and US$ 1,500 lower respectively as it was launched later than LG, intending to dominate the market with a more competitive price.

LG electronics has also launched a premium OLED TV set last February; LG plans to launch 10 models (77/65W7, 77/65G7, 65/55E7, 65/55C7, 65/55B7) in five Ultra OLED TV series this year. The price of LG’s major model, OLED65C7 is US$ 4,499.00 on Amazon.com, 25% lower than OLED65C6 and a similar price to Samsung’s 65Q7C. But both the Signature OLED TV, OLED65G7P and the wall paper OLED TV, OLED65W7 are US$ 1,000 and US$ 2,000 higher respectively than Samsung’s most expensive 65” QLED TV, QN65Q9F. The premium market is divided by two categories of entry and high-end: low-priced entry model to compete with Samsung’ QLEDTV and premium-priced high end model to pioneer a niche market.

Unlike LG and Sony, Samsung has been focusing on QLED TV, launching super premium product lines (Q7,Q8,Q9) at the Louvre exhibition in Paris on March 14th The product lines consist of 11 models (88/75/65Q9F, 75/65/55Q8C, 75/65/55Q7F, 65/55Q7C) in 4series- the initial F means flat and C means curved. Q9 far more luxurious model than Q7and Q8 will be launched in April this year.

The price of 65Q8C will be US$ 4,799.99, and 65Q9F for US$ 5,999.99 as of March 14th at Best Buy, both of which are 20% higher than ‘SUHD TV’, one of premium TV line ups launched in 2016. Their high price range as Sony and better screen quality with 100% proved color volume are major attributes to establish luxury brand image of the premium TV set.

The premium TV market in 2017 is expecting a neck and neck competition again between the three major market leaders- Samsung, LG and Sony. LG, still the best market leader with OLED TV in the premium TV market versus Sony recently advanced in OLED TV market, and Samsung’s QLED TV marketing: How significantly would the three major players affect the premium TV market in 2017? That’s the focal point for consumers and stakeholders.

What is the future of OLED?

Choong Hoon Yi, president of UBI Research made a keynote speech with a theme “The Future of OLED” at ‘The 3rd OLED Korea Conference’ hosted by UBI Research for two days from March 8 to 9.

Choong Hoon Yi, president of UBI Research stated “100-inch rollable wall TV is the future of OLED”. “human eyes have a wide viewing angle so even if display covers the whole wall, there is no discomfort. Glass substrate OLED may be difficult to carry, and accordingly rollable display can be rolled up and delivered like a carpet.” he added.

He also predicted “plastic substrates and printing process for price cut will be suitable for rollable display. TFT and pixel production techniques made by Solution process will be a key to future technology”. If a speaker is built in rollable display, and a correspondence between the person and sound on the screen will represent a perfect display.

Choong Hoon Yi said the reasons for the success of OLED can be found out in the mobile market.
Firstly, 4K contents to be used for future TVs will be used in smartphones, and smartphones will also use 4K resolution.

Second, Apple will release the OLED iPhone this year, and there will be an Apple effect because Samsung Display is building the A3 line for Apple to produce 200 million 5.5-inch OLED displays.

Third, Chinese market accounts for 40% of the global smartphone market, and Chinese set companies have been rapidly increasing the release of smartphones.

Lastly, a flexible OLED to cover the full screen smartphone will have no home button and feature wide screen to satisfy visual functions, and its strengthened security system that reads fingerprint and pattern can be applied.

For the four reasons above, he expected OLED will be key in the future mobile market.

Meanwhile, he expected the shipments of OLED panel will be 1.7 billion in 2021, and the sales will amount to US$ 75 billion. Korean display companies will represent more than 80% of the total market in 2021, and China will take up 10~15%. In addition, he forecast that display panel companies will make a new investment in flexible OLED which will account for 70% of the total OLED market.

Visionox Announced OLED’s Own Innovative Technology is Flexible Display

Visionox’s principle researcher Li Lin gave a keynote speech with a theme “Development of Foldable AMOLED Display” at the 3rd OLED Korea Conference held for two days from March 8 to 9 by UBI Research.

Principle researcher Li Lin explained the development trend of flexible display, saying “Initial CRT was originally developed as an oscilloscope, but due to the development of full-color technology, it has been used commonly in our lives. LCD was also developed as a segment display, but due to the development of semiconductor technology, TFT black plane was applied to LCD so that LCD could be able to be used for smartphone and large-screen TV as well. The combination of the latest electronic technology and material technology enables display innovation, and the most innovative technology of OLED different from existing displays is a flexible display, Visionox is intensively developing now”.

In addition, he introduced the development history of Visionox’s flexible display, unveiled touch sensor 7-inch foldable AMOLED display that was developed in November 2016, and announced this module featuring 180° out-folding passed a folding test.

<Flexible AMOLED display with the touch-sensor featuring 180° out-folding, Source: Visionox.com>

He added that in order to develop foldable display, it is very essential to improve reliability of TFT, use durable materials such as strong OCA, scratch-resistant and durable cover window film, thinner circular polarizer layer, and panel-combined touch panel, and decrease module thickness.

Meanwhile, principle researcher Li Lin said “The mass production of Flexible OLED panel finally depends on the yield improvement. But, skills and experience for mass production are still insufficient.” Regarding the question about the development of circular polarizer layer, he answered “Reducing thickness is a key. Mike Hack, vice president of UDC introduced solution process technology, OVJP (Organic Vapor Jet Printing) technology during the COLOR IS UNIVERSAL Session of “The 3rd OLED KOREA CONFERENCE” hosted by UBI Research.

Mike Hack emphasized “OVJP technology can still use OLED materials used for the deposition process unlike the existing ink-jet solution process, and FMM and solvent are unnecessary”.

Besides, he introduced UDC’s Novel BY Display Architecture. According to his announcement, this structure has increased the mask opening size for one-time 2 pixel deposition. Also, Novel BY Display Architecture features the alternate deposition of blue and yellow sub pixels instead of existing RGB, and red and green CF in half of yellow sub pixel is arranged in a vertical symmetrical fashion.

Mike Hack said “This structure maximized not only the fill factor of blue and yellow sub pixel but also the color reproduction rate, efficiency and life time of OLED panel”. He also mentioned it can reduce manufacturing costs due to the use of less than 3data per pixel and 2-step EML deposition(FMM).
Lastly, UDC closed its announcement adding that they aim at the development and commercialization of PH emitter and host.

Meanwhile, according to “Market Entry Analysis for Solution Process OLED” by UBI Research, the emitting material used for the ink-jet solution process employs a method of mixing various solvents in an emitting material used for the deposition process. It lowered the purity of a materials, thereby reducing emitting efficiency and life time. Despite this advantage, solution process can increase the usage efficiency of emitting materials without using color filter and manufacture large-screen OLED panels via RGB pixel structure without panel split through over Gen8 equipment. Due to this advantage, major panel companies are actively developing it and trying to achieve the preoccupancy of commercialization.

Developing ultra-definition display with a color filter technology

A color filter technology has been developed that can bring forward commercialization of next generation’s TVs with ultra-definition visibility and lower prices. The National Research Foundation of Korea (a chairman of the board, Moo-jae, Cho) announced that Prof. for Korea University, Byeong-kwon, Joo’s research team has developed a complementary plasmon color filter having sharp display and high resolution. The color filters which are currently used in the display industry mainly are optical absorption type using pigments or dyes. It has low chemical stability since it is based on organic materials and high unit cost due to manufacturing RGB filters separately. On the other hand, the optical interference type plasmon color filter using inorganic materials can simultaneously produce various color filters at low cost, but there is a problem that the color purity is in decline due to color interference occurring in the two-dimension array of nanostructures.

<Transmittance spectrum according to opening ratio of Hole pattern and dot pattern structures, Source: The National Research Foundation of Korea>

The research team applied a reversal approach to break out the existing pattern as complementary design method that combines dot pattern with hole pattern. It is a general viewpoint of academia that it is difficult to apply dot pattern to a transmission color filter in the form of reversing the existing hole pattern. However, the team assured that the extraction of high purity for red is possible through effective blocking the leakage of short wavelengths by dot pattern under certain conditions. The result is shown that the range of implementing color in the complementary designed plasmon color filter is widened over 30% than before.

In addition, the implementing of various color of the complementary plasmon color filters is available such as red, green, and blue by adjusting only the geometric parameters of the nanopattern. The performance can be improved without additional costs since the existing materials and manufacturing methods could be used as usual.

Prof. Byeong-kwon, Joo explained that “This research has developed a plasmon color filter with high color reproducibility through a complementary design method. This is expected to accelerate the development of the next-generation display combining nano-optic devices.”

The research results were performed by supporting of the Basic Research Support Project(private research) of the National Research Foundation of Korea at the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning, the Ministry of Education·BK21 support project of the National Research Foundation. It was published in the Scientific Reports affiliated journal of an international journal Nature, on January, 13th.

Sensational Self-driving Cars and OLED Display in 2017

Institute for Information & Communications Technology Promotion(IITP) has selected and announced the next-year top 10 issues of ICT(Information & Communication Technology) since 2008, and selected automotive issues including self-driving and connected cars among top 10 ICT issues in 2017.

A self-driving car is a vehicle that is capable of sensing its environment and surroundings and driving along a planned path, and a connected car is a car that is usually connected with a network due to its convergence with IT technology. Apple’s CarPlay and Google’s Android Auto are representative.

An autonomous car currently under development puts more importance on the display that can provide necessary information in time because information is increasingly diversifying and complex. With the higher availability of interior space in the not partial but full self-driving age, the utilization of display that can support a driver’s various secondary activities is expected to increase.

In addition, as smart devices and network have advanced, a connected car is expected to use media contents streaming and various application services through display including in-vehicle CID(Center Information Display). And, it will be a connected device that connects a driver-car-house through display that provides wireless communication service and information.

Accordingly, many panel companies including LG Display are developing automotive displays, and automobile companies also try to apply different displays in order to differentiate from other companies and highlight merchantable quality. Especially, they are actively considering flexible displays because it is difficult to use the large area of flat displays with curved surface in cluster and CID, and therefore OLED display with good design availability is receiving attention.

AMOLED panel has the advantages of rapid response speed and high visibility based on wide viewing angle, high color reproduction rate and contrast range. And, its flexible design is so easy that it is applicable regardless of location, thereby attracting automobile companies. But, its short lifespan remains a current issue, and panel companies are carrying out development for performance improvement such as better lifespan, service temperature, and brightness.

<Market Share Forecast of Displays in the Automotive Display Market, 2017~2022>

Meanwhile, according to “Automotive Display Report – application & market trend analysis and the market forecast” published by UBI Research, OLED pane is expected to be applied to automotive cluster or CID beginning in 2018, and the automotive display market is likely to increase about 17% annually on average and will reach about US$ 25,000 million by 2022. Also, it forecasted that the AMOLED panel market will account for about 20% of the total sales.

Will Curved TV Disappear in the Premium TV Market?

The curved TV introduced firstly in 2013 has attracted attention for a long time, and many companies including Samsung Electronics and China’s Hisense, Haier and TCL showcased curved TVs at CES 2016. In addition, newcomers including Xiaomi and LeTV released curved TVs, and Samsung Electronics organized ‘Curved Federation’ with China’s TV companies such as Hisense and TCL in August, 2016 to cooperate with each other for the expansion of curved market, and the reviews on the curved TV market are generally positive.

But, only a few companies such as Korean and Chinese ones unveiled curved TVs at CES 2017, while other electronics companies in Europe and the US showcased flat TVs only. Meanwhile, LG Electronics said that it plan to release flat TVs only for Q9, a flagship TV model of 2017 but curved TVs for less expensive models Q7 and Q8. With its plan to focus on flat OLED TV in the future, pointing out the downward trend of curved TV market, LG plans to pay more attention to flat OLED TV. Likewise, major TV set companies’ awareness of curved TV started to change. Besides, European electronics company Vestel mentioned the disadvantage of curved TV that is too sensitive to viewing angle, and TV review company Reviewed.com and other review companies offered negative opinions on curved TV. This expects that the position of curved TVs is likely to dwindle in the premium TV market.

Accordingly, the premium TV market will have intense competition for the clear picture quality of flat type TVs, whereas curved TVs are expected to have competition with Chinese companies in a lower level TV market. As many Chinese TV makers have released curved TVs, curved TV in the premium TV market is no longer a competitive point. Therefore, TV set companies need to find a new turning point to catch the eyes of the consumers.

LG’s OLED TV is expected to surpass 15% among total TV sales this year

During the conference call that reported operating profits, LG Electronics announced on January 25 that OLED TVs accounted for below 5% of its total TV sales volume in 2015, but more than doubled in 2016 and achieved 10%. In addition, the share of LG’s OLED TV in the premium market over 2,000 dollars has rapidly increased, and it has solidified its leadership in the high-end OLED TV market. Therefore, LG said OLED TV sales are expected to rise and accordingly account for more than 15% of its total TV sales in 2017.

Also, LG Electronics’ sales reached 55.3660 trillion won, and its total operating profit last year was 1.3378 trillion won. The company’s annual sales dropped 2 percent from 2016(56.5090 trillion won), while its operating profits increased 12.2 percent from last year(1.1923 trillion won).

Especially, the sales of HE(Home Entertainment) division rose 0.2% from last year(17.3976 trillion won) thanks to an increased demand for TVs and premium TV sales. Despite rise in panel prices, LG reported a record operating profit of 1.2374 trillion won through its premium product sales and strategy to improve cost competitiveness.

Accordingly, LG Electronics announced it plans to continuously release premium TVs by adding such premium functions as IoT to existing products. It is also planning to expand its business focusing on the expansion of sales markets through globalization, going beyond its sales in Korea and USA.

Meanwhile, LG Electronics plans to start operating the E4 phase2 26K Gen8 OLED production line that it invested in 2016, in the second quarter this year. In addition, OLED TV price is expected to drop, and accordingly the OLED TV market is likely to increase significantly.

LG Display Invests 5 Trillion Won in OLED Business, including Plastic OLED

LG Display has decided to change its business portfolio to concentrate organic light-emitting diode (OLED) business. Through the conference call that reported operating profits in the fourth quarter of 2016, LG Display announced on January 24 that it plans to invest some 5 trillion won in facilities this year, and put investment in OLED including Gen6 Plastic OLED and large-size OLED manufacturing facilities. Especially, its investment in OLED is expected to rise to 70% by 20% in 2017, compared to last year with a plan to expand the OLED market.

LG Display Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Kim Sang-don said, “LG Display has reorganized its business structure by integrating previous 5 divisions into a total of 3 divisions such as TV, IT and mobile for its business efficiency.” “It will concentrate not only clear picture but also design and price in large-size LCD TV panels, while producing small and mid-size OLED panels focused on E-5 Gen6 POLED mobile and automotive business. Gen6 E-5 plants also plan to start producing POLED in the third quarter this year. Regarding new Capa, the sizes of new OLED will be 55”, 65” and 77”, and the Capa over 65″ is expected to rise more than 40% this year, a 10 % increase from 30% in 2016”.

Kim said, “the company has secured a total of 60,000 OLED TV capa in the second half of the year according to this year’s OLED TV forecast and yield improvement, and this is the capacity that can produce 1.5 million to 1.8 million televisions a year. Also, he emphasized “Our large-size OLED panel achieved the industry’s yield of 80 percent, which means OLED achieved its golden yield in just two years, compared to LCD’s golden yield of 10 years”.

Kim added “Regarding Chinese firms’ large-size LCD panel line extension that has become an issue recently, the production of Gen8.5 OLED and LCD is now available, but we still need to examine technology, production and productivity of over Gen10 panels. We will carefully consider the extension of the super large 60” 4K and 8K market. Also, LG Display’s middle and long-term strategy is to create a new OLED market so as to expand OLED.

With regard to the price comparison with LCD TV, “more than 60,000 capa is added this year through OLED line extension, and this is the capacity that can produce 1.5 million to 1.8 million televisions. It is a very small scale compared to the entire TV market size, and the price comparison with LCD is meaningless” according to him. LG Display announced that it plans to expand the OLED market for commercial purposes such as signage, broadcasting and medical use in 2007, while emphasizing the target of OLED TV is not the competition with LCD but only the high-end premium TV market.

Meanwhile, regarding the ownership of crystal sound that were unveiled at CES 2017 held in Las Vegas, USA, “In addition to LG DISPLAY’s crystal sound panel, its strategic partner Sony Entertainment Television (SET) improved sound through sound control and algorithm, and OLED panel’s quadrant sound control is LG DISPAY’s own technology” it said.

LG DISPLAY posted 7.9360 trillion won in sales and 904 billion won in operating profits in the fourth quarter last year, recording the black-ink balance for 19 consecutive quarters. Its net profits increased to 824.7 billion won, a whopping 335% increase from the previous quarter. 38 percent of sales in the fourth quarter came from displays for televisions; 31 percent from displays for mobile devices; 17 percent for laptops and tablets; and 14 percent for monitors. Due to the increase in panel prices and demands, its sales reached 26.5041 trillion won, and operating profit was 1.3114 trillion won, surpassing the 1 trillion won for a fourth straight year while keeping a positive trend in its profits.

In the meantime, UBI Research expected that LG Display will produce 1.5 million large-size OLED panels over 50-inch.

OLED TV, fiercely chasing SUHD TV Price

OLED TV price is being fallen continuously, and is fiercely chasing SUHD TV price. In Amazon (www.amazon.com), the price of 65inch 4k UHD OLED TV (OLED65B6), LG Electronic model of March 2016, was US$ 3,147 based on December 2016, and US$ 1,600 appeared to be dropped compared to US$ 4,747, price of July 2016. The price of 55inch 4k UHD OLED TV (OLED5B6) was US$ 2,097, and US$ 800 was fallen compared to US$ 2,897, the price of July 2016.

SUHD TV price of Samsung Electronics which was similar premium product series was US$ 1,648 in 65inch (UN65KS8000), and differences of US$1,499 turned up compared to same size UHD OLED TV of LG Electronics. Specially, US$ 966 difference appeared compared to same-size UHD OLED TV of LG Electronics as US$ 1,131 of 55inch (UN55KS8000), and the gap could been seen as being narrowed to below US$ 1,000.

<Price comparison of LG Electronics, LG Electronics 65inch, 55inch TV, Source: UBI Research>

If comparing price difference between UHD OLED TV based on 2016 65inch model and SUHD TV, about US$ price differences come out based on July 2016, a fact appeared such like OLED TV price was quickly narrowing price difference with SUHD TV price in 55inch and 65inch as well as difference of about US$ 1,500 based on December 2016.

On the other hand, LG Display is expected to really operate mass production line of E4 phase2 26K Gen8 OLED having been invested in 2016 from the 2nd quarter, and thus an estimation is made such like OLED TV price will be dropped further.

Besides, participating companies of OLED TV camp in CES 2017 were increased remarkably, and OLED TV market is being activated in trend because large manufacturer like Sony joined with several European companies especially, and thus it is expected that price drop of OLED TV will occupy advantageous position in competitions with LCD TV in premium TV market.

The image quality is enough, AMOLED for user’s eye health is general trend now.

Modern people who are exposed to electronic devices such as smart phones, PCs, TVs, and monitors can cause fatigue and dry eye syndrome by blue light which might damage the retina or lens in severe case. It may especially disturb a restful sleep by affecting melatonin negatively which is the secretion of sleep-inducing hormone.

Samsung Display has introduced the strength points of self-emitting AMOLED on the blog that can block the harmful blue light by emitting nearby safe wavelength to keep the color and reduce the emission of 425-455mm area in harmful wavelength. They have acquisitioned the industry’s first “Safety for Eyes” certification regarding on the excellence of eye’s health in the photobiological stability test conducted by German certification institute, VDE (Verband Deutscher Elektrotrchniker e.v) in 2016.

They have also represented various advantages that offer excellent color reproduction ratio of 100% against LCD showing 74% level of DCI-P3 standard, thinner thickness than half and low power consumption compared to LCD. They promoted variety merits of eco-friendly AMOLED only for user’s eye health (e.g., ‘Vision Aid’ checks itself the degree of deficiency of cone cell for color blind people and adjusts intentionally the insufficient color stronger for them to look well) as well as the performance including image quality by using blog.

Meanwhile, Samsung Display showed a Bio blue panel applied pixel structure with deep blue sub-pixel and light blue sub-pixel in SID 2016 and IMID 2016. Deep blue and light blue are applied to prevent the degradation of color expressiveness of AMOLED panels that are replaced by light blue only and sharply reduced the gravity of blue light on AMOLED to 12.8%, half of the 25.1% of LCD.

Expect to hit 1 trillion won in OLED emitting material market for 2017

The OLED emitting material market is expected to exceed 1 trillion won in 2017.

The OLED emitting material market grew by 15%, about US$ 650 million versus 2015 according to “OLED emitting material Report-2nd data spread sheet” of Ubi research and it expects to achieve about US$ 980 million that over 1 trillion won in terms of Korean currency in 2017.

A researcher of Ubi Research said, “Despite continued price declines of OLED emitting materials, the 15% growth of the OLED materials market has analyzed due to the increased operation ratio of Samsung Display and LG Display in 2016. The OLED emitting material market in 2017 will be sharply grow through in earnest operating of A3 line of Samsung Display and E4 line of LG Display invested in 2016.”

Additionally mentioned, “The OLED emitting materials companies should pay attention to the high operation ratio of OLED production lines in China in 2017. Although the quantities of consumed for OLED materials of current Chinese company are less, but, the investment in mass production lines for Gen6 flexible AMOLED panels is underway, and sales volume of AMOLED panel companies in China may expect to grow sharply in the OLED emitting materials market. Therefore, the OLED emitting material companies should concentrate sales business for China in order to grow.

As such, the competition among related companies is expected to intensify because the OLED emitting material market would be increasing sharply in 2017.

Meanwhile, according to the report on the major performance by company in 2016, Samsung SDI (including Novaled) ranked first, followed by Idemisu Kosan (Japan) and UDC (US).

[CES2017] LG Display, Successful Development of a Talking Display First in the World

LG Display completed the dream having been hoped from flat display, and opened the product firstly in private booth of CES2017.

In the time when LCD was begun to be settled as a representative runner of flat display, a lot of display engineers hoped to the display to which speakers were attached. However, the speaker and display could not be unified because speaker could affect influences to liquid crystal movement.

Nonetheless, such limitations of LCD were solved through OLED. Convergence which unifies display and speaker becomes to be completed by LG Display ultimately.

LG Display made the sound come out directly by attaching small-size speakers to panel backside. If using this type, the feeling of having the sound of actor when talking could be gotten.

As the panel is vibrated along with the speaker movement, small beads having been put on the panel were moved in a wave according to sound effects. If expressing reversely, the sound could be seen.
The talking Display to which anyone did not succeed becomes to be realized finally. The name of this Display is “Crystal Sound OLED.”

President Yeo Sang-deok having led Crystal Sound OLED development said a worry that impact to credibility on OLED panel would occur in the first developmental stage, but revealed a pride in that successful product development was made first in the world eventually. President Yeo did not hide joy in making best work in his life as top head of LG Display which led OLED TV development.

From this year, the position of President Yeo was changed to CMO from head of OLED business. He seems to lead OLED future of LG Display yet. President Yeo Sang-deok lighted up his ambition such like he would do his best to make OLED ecosystem more healthily and firmly as his future roles. President Yeo took charge of Chairperson of The Korean Information Display Association (KDIS) from 2017. Based on his various experiences of LCD, OLED development, it is expected that he will be a leader who puts together industry, academia, and research.

[CES2017] LG Electronics Press Conference and Exhibition Trend

LG Electronics having a virtual monopoly on the OLED TV market has mentioned at the CES2017 press conference that the new OLED TV in 2017 is “LG Signature OLED TV W”. The”W” means “Wallpaper TV”.

OLED TV W, which LG Electronics will sell this year, is only 2.57mm thin-unlike LCD TV, there is no back light. In recent years, LCD TVs use direct backlights to increase brightness, and these products are rather thicker.

In order to emphasize that OLED TV W is thin and relatively light enough to be attached on the wall. LG Electronics displays OLED TV W on the glass. The Dolby speakers are installed separately under TV.

LG Electronics’ exhibition hall is filled with more and more OLED TVs, and about 30% of the exhibition room is taken for OLED TVs.

The OLED TV domes such as IFA2016 occupied the last space of the exhibition hall and there was a room where the excellent image quality of OLED TV integrated with HDR technology was introduced.

In the center of the exhibition room, OLED TV W which was introduced at the press conference is being displayed.

As LG Electronics’ OLED TV shown at CES2017 was similar to that of IFA2016 last year, no technical or design-wise novelty was found.

[CES2017] The load of the TVs : Return of the king

Sony was just kept premium TV market because they were left behind by Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics in middle-price TV market and not released new products in low-price market also, although they have been dominated the TV market until 10 years ago. But, Sony has splendidly returned with OLED TV at CES2017.

TV business was the face of Sony due to having the strongest aspects in the TV market, they always were located at the main showroom as the center during CES and IFA. However, the TV business has been downsized due to years of deficits on it and the camera replaced the TV spot in CES2016 and IFA2016 last year. Many attendees at the show felt that Sony was into the process of falling out of the TV business and thought it would turn into a camera company.

Sony, however, declared that they will be a king once again in the TV market at CES2017. TV defeated the camera and took the middle of the entrance of the exhibition hall again. But this TV is not an LCD that Sony has ever sold, but an OLED TV.

Sony has unveiled its BRAVIA OLED adapted a 4K HDR process X1 on 77-inch and 65-inch Crystal Sound OLED panels which is directly developed by Sony and produced by LG Display.

There was different from the OLED TV seen so far. In short, it’s “WOW”. It can be described as the most beautiful and elegant TV in the world. It was not comparable to the existing BRAVIA LCD TV displayed next to it. That LCD TV has the highest image quality among LCD TVs by using Quantum dot technology. Nevertheless, these LCD TVs have fallen into low grades unlike those of newly introduced OLED TVs.

A Sony representative of the exhibition said that the points to decide the OLED TV business was due to the meeting with Sony’s desire for image quality, and that mass production has not been decided yet but it will be after the second quarter of this year.

So far, the OLED TV market has been dominated by LG Electronics under leading, but with the attending of Sony, the OLED TV market is expected to grow even further.

The premium TV market will be led by LG Electronics and Sony focused by OLED TVs.

OLED panel for automotive display to be applied from 2018/The core issue is for its life-time extension.

OLED panels are expected to be used in automotive displays joining to mobile devices and TVs.

It clearly revealed that the flexible OLEDs are becoming the flagship product for automotive display in CES2017 through the Chrysler’s conference as pre-event. (website: https://www.olednet.com/en/ces2017-media-day-chrysler-potal/)

According to the “Automotive Display Report – Application & Market Trend Analysis and the Market Forecast” published by Ubi Research, OLED panels are expected to be applied to automotive cluster and CID in earnest from 2018. It will be applied to premium cars first under flexibility and superiority of image quality.

Car manufacturers are attempting to differentiate themselves with the concepts of environmentally friendly, connected, smart, and autonomous driving, and thus the interface inside the vehicle is also changing. There might be a limit to the existing analogue methods since various information must be transmitted and processed especially, as developed connected, smart car, and autonomous vehicle.

Therefore, the role of display in automobiles is becoming increasingly important and the area of display is gradually widening. Especially, since the cluster and CID have many curved surfaces, it is difficult to apply a square display to a large area and accordingly, the importance of a flexible display is emphasized.

The automobile manufacturers show great interest to the AMOLED panel since it can provide high visibility to the drivers and it is flexible and applicable to any part of the automobile based on its fast response speed, wide viewing angle, high color reproduction rate and contrast range. It is under joint development with major panel makers.

However, there is a problem that the lifetime of the AMOLED panel is still insufficient for application to automobiles. According to the analyzing report, the lifetime of the AMOLED panel has met about 50% as compared to the requirements for the car display. The most important issue is securing lifetime for the AMOLED panel usage.

According to the report also, the automotive display market will grow at an annual average of about 17%, reaching US $ 25,000 million by 2022, and it forecasted that the AMOLED panel market will account for about 20%.

[CES2017] Media Day: Meeting of the Prestigious Automaker and the Great Display Manufacturer

Chrysler held an event to introduce its next-generation concept car “POTAL” at the Pre-CES 2017 show, Pre-CES2017Media Event.

Chrysler classified the space where humans will live in the future into three; family, job and vehicle, and named vehicles a “Third Space”. Future drivers can do a variety of activities inside vehicles thanks to autonomous driving.

The interior design of “POTAL” is very simply organized. The steering wheel is designed to have storage space in dashboard. The high-mount instrument panel display is positioned on the top of the dashboard to have high visibility. ‘Connected’ interface is applied between display and the surrounding environment including driving information. There is another display underneath the dashboard.

The displays on the interior front of “POTAL” prepared to open the new era of future vehicles consist of AMOLED. A ‘high-mount’ AMOLED display is flexible OLED, and a display underneath is a 12-inch glass AMOLED. Both displays are supplied by Samsung Display.

At many car shows, the concept cars with curved displays have been introduced so far, but this show might be the first time to exhibit flexible OLED directly.

Flexible OLED used for ‘POTAL’ is so reflective to minimize the loss of information against light coming in from the outside, and its background is black to have optimum visibility.

The prestigious automaker and the great OLED manufacturer meet and create a new technology.

Flexible OLED provided by the world’s best mobile display company, Samsung Display is not expected to be used in the f motor industry or a while. Apple will apply flexible OLED to iPhone in earnest, and Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. will also use flexible OLED entirely for the next-gen Galaxy S8. Accordingly, the on-going flexible OLED line also lacks a capacity to respond to the smartphone market. Samsung Display’s flexible OLED is expected to continue a shortage of supply until 2019 so that the world’s best luxurious instrument panel will be supplied by 2020.

AUO introduced bi-directional foldable AMOLED display which both internal and external displays can be bent 180 degrees.

Taiwanese company, AU Optronics(AUO) introduced bi-directional foldable AMOLED display at IDW(International Display Workshoops) 2016 opened in Japan Fukuoka from last December 7th through 9th, which both internal and external displays can be bent 180 degrees.

<Changes in luminance ratio according to the folding time in inward and outward folding condition, IDW 2016>

The existing flexible AMOLED display is formed in the order of plastic board / OLED device / circular polarizer / touch film, and this structure had limits in flexibly bend both internally and externally because the upper and lower properties of main material become asymmetric. Regarding this, AUO located approximately 10um thickness of color filter array in the middle which replaces the circular polarizer, and located TFT and TFE layer in neutral axis, and by forming a structure to endure the tensile strength and compressive strength, they made it possible to endure folding cycle of more than 1.2 million in 4mm radius of curvature. The entire thickness is approximately 100um, and color filter array excluded the polarizer and used as a purpose of suppressing the reflection light.

Also, AUO introduced 5” foldable AMOLED panel function which applied the color filter array. When color filter array is applied, the power consumption decreased about 50% from 1603mW to 824mW compared to circular polarizer, and showed that the operating life was improved 3 times in 300 nits of same brightness.

Sony, Two OLED TV models will be released in 2017??

It is true that Sony, which had rumors, has entered the OLED TV market in 2017. Barry Young, CEO of the OLED association, told Forbes that Sony will launch two 55-inch and 65-inch OLED TVs in 2017.

The CEO, Barry Young will begin panel shipment from Q2 2017, and will begin full-fledged sales in Q3 or Q4. It plans that 55-inch 4K OLED TV will be about 80,000 units, and 65-inch OLED TV will be about 120,000 units.

Sony has previously released monitors based on LGD’s OLED panels, and it is reported that LGD will also supply OLED TV panels. Notable thing is the price of Sony OLED TV. According to Barry Young, Sony’s 55-inch OLED TV will cost about $ 1,999 and the 65-inch will cost about $ 2,999. This is respectively $300 cheaper than LG’s 55-inch UHD OLED TV price of $ 2,297 (OLED55B6, Amazon) and 65-inch UHD OLED TV price of $ 3,297 (OLED65B6, Amazon) released by LG Electronics in June 2016. In the premium OLED TV market, which is now dominated by LG Electronics, a price competition is expected.

It is unclear whether Sony’s OLED TV will be released at CES 2017, but it is expected to be confirmed at CES 2017 if production is certain. Due to Sony’s entry into the OLED TV market, LG Electronics is expected to aggressively price OLED TVs in 2017, it is focused on how Sony’s entry into the OLED TV market will contribute to the popularization of OLED TV and how it will affect the display industry.

OLED TV, leading a new paradigm in the display market

‘2016 OLED accounting seminar was held by Ubi industrial research on Dec 2nd in the Small& Medium Enterprise Hall. Lee, ChungHoon, the president of Ubi industrial research said, “OLED is leading a new paradigm in the display market, advancing a perfect black color and fast response rate compared to LCD. Most LCD manufacturers have introduced QD-LCD with the enhanced color reproduction, compared to the existing LCD. However, OLED is also in the evolution of display technology ”

LG electronics set up dark light at the booth in CES 2016; but later in IFA 2016 it displayed OLED TV, brightening the booth to show the confidence in luminance of OLED TV. Via CES 2016 and IFA 2016 the luminance has been improved from 600 nits to 800 nits, and next year OLED TV with higher than 1,000 nits will be launched.

The president Lee said, “In the current TV market, the unit price of OLED panel is triple the price of LCD and QD-LCD is double. If LG display reduces the OLED panel price, LCD manufacturers will be threatened due to the competitive pricing and technology of OLED panel.”

LCD manufacturers need to prepare marketing strategy for QD-LCD to be distinguished from OLED. Certainly there has been a market interest increased in QLED which seems, however, to be at a very early development stage like an embryo in the product life cycle. The soluble OLED will be introduced in the market earlier than QLED, the development of which prospectively takes at least 10years.

The primary issues of OLED TV can be summarized in three elements-size, price and luminance. The current OLED TV size is mainly 55”, but it is important to form a market for 65” and larger. The investment in Gen 10 line is necessary but has not been well established yet. As far as the price is concerned, if the ink jet technique is implemented in a new production line the price can be significantly reduced. The luminance can also be improved by 3-stack and top emission structure.

The shipping amount in 2016 is 390million, and will reach 1.5billion in 2020 in prospect. Flexible OLED panel will lead the high-end market while a rigid OLED panel for the mid-end market. The revenue will grow from 17trillion in 2016 to 60trillion in 2020. The estimate can be accomplished if Chinese manufacturers such as BOE, Tianma and GVO successfully advance and continue to grow in the market.

The current OLED market is growing in the mobile-oriented market, however, since 2018 TV will be stably settled and well established in the future.

2017 will be an important year to be able to emphasize the innovation of OLED to consumers

<Lee Woo-keun, a senior researcher at LG Economic Research Institute>

Lee Woo-keun, a senior researcher at LG Economic Research Institute, predicted that the year 2017 will be an important year to be able to emphasize the innovation of OLED to consumers, in the seminar for the 2016 OLED evaluation held at the Yeouido Small & Medium Business Center in Seoul, hosted by UbI Research on last December 2.

He added “LG is leading the OLED TV market in the premium TV market ahead of next year’s CES, but we will have to keep an eye on the impact of Sony’s joining” as one of the notable issues in large-sized OLED panels, and he continued “as there is still a fundamental expectation for Sony’s image quality among existing consumers, we will have to pay attention to what innovative appearance Sony’ OLED TVs will show and how they can appeal to consumers.

Referring to the adoption of OLED panels in Apple’s iPhone8 (tentative name) in the mobile phone market, as a small and medium issue, he said “it is important how to realize OLED display on Apple iphone 8, and how much impact it will have on consumers through this”. He said “if we could not show the innovation distinguishing it from existing LCDs despite adopting OLEDs, consumers’ expectations for OLEDs may be diminished,” emphasizing that it should draw meaningful responses to OLEDs from consumers’ perspective .

It is expected that Apple will launch iPhone applying flexible AMOLED panels in 2017, and Sony is also being confirmed to continuously review its entry into the OLED TV business. In 2017, it is expected that the number of set-makers launching OLED-applied products will increase more. In the situation that consumers are expecting a ‘completely new thing owned only by OLED products’, which is entirely different from existing LCD products, through various media reports and rumors, the year 2017 seems to be an important year to emphasize the innovation of OLED and to promote its merchantability.

AMOLED panel for smart phones, just around the corner of 100million-unit shipment in a quarter

According to UBI Research, the shipment amount of AMOLED panel for smart phones in the 3rd quarter of 2016 was announced to be counted as 96million units.

It is the figure increased for 103% compared with the last quarter, and increased for 148% compared with the same period of last year, and it renewed the quarterly highest shipment amount once again, after the last quarter.

The person in charge of UBI Research mentioned that “The output of flexible AMOLED panels for Galaxy Note 7 was reduced compared to the plan due to the discontinuation of the production of Galaxy Note 7, however, the increase in shipments of AMOLED panels for China and Galaxy s7 series is seemed to play a important role in the increase of shipments in the third quarter.”

Currently, Samsung Display occupies more than 91% of the AMOLED panel market for smart phones, and Chinese panel makers such as BOE, EDO, Tianma, and Visionox are conducting mass production with small quantities.

In addition, Apple is expected to apply the flexible AMOLED panel to some models of the iPhone to be launched in 2017, therefore, future AMOLED panel market for smart phones will be increased continuously.

UBI Research expects that the annual shipment amount of AMOLED panel will form the market volume as about 1.4billion units by 2020 with the average annual growth rate of 41%, and flexible AMOLED panel among them will account for about 61%.

Would it be possible to accelerate commercialization of QLED by Samsung Electronics’ acquisition of ‘QD Vision’?

According to the industry source dated Nov. 21, it was confirmed that Samsung Electronics was selected as a preferred bidder participating in the acquisition battle for ‘QD Vision’. The amount of acquisition proposed by Samsung Electronics is U$70million, and the industry expects that the final takeover will be agreed no later than the next week.

Quantum dot is the materials whose implementing color is different according to the size, and Samsung Electronics is introducing SUHD TV to the premium TV market, which improves the color reproduction rate by applying quantum dot sheet to LCD BLU for the first time in the world, and Chinese companies are actively launching the products.

‘QD Vision’ established by the researchers from MIT, is a specialized enterprise with high technology in the field of cadmium-based quantum dot and it is introducing non-cadmium-based material, too, lately. The industry considers that the acquisition of ‘QD vision’ by Samsung Electronics is the cornerstone to accelerate the commercialization of QLED along with the expansion of the quantum-dot TV market.

Although QLED is highly anticipated to be available to realize the panel with high purity as it is less impacted by oxygen and moisture than OLED and as it has a narrow half width, very low efficiency and life time compared to OLED materials are mentioned as the problem, under its initial stage of development. Furthermore, cadmium used in the core of quantum dot is highly toxic carcinogen, so Cd-free materials are being developed by ‘QD Vision’, ‘Nanoco’, ‘Nanosquare’, etc., however, its performance is lower than Cd-base materials. Therefore, the industry expects that it will take at least 5 years for QLED to be applied to mass production.

In the meantime, related with this issue, in the ‘Market penetration possibility analysis and seminar for QLED and Solution Process OLED’ hosted by UB Research in last October, Professor Chang-hee Lee of Seoul National University mentioned that, “If large-scale investment and manpower would be input, it is likely to find the product in earlier time than expected, and there is a possibility that the entry barrier can be lowered due to its similar structure to OLED”

It is highly attended that whether the acquisition of ‘QD vision’ by Samsung Electronics can accelerate the commercialization of QLED by becoming the starting point of large-scale investment, and what effect would be influenced to the display industry.

BOE and CSOT, Acquired the China first title through the panel for OLED TV

In ‘18th China High- Tech Fair,’ BOE collected a big topic by exhibiting 55” UHD OLED TV of Skyworth to which 55” UHD OLED Module was applied.

CSOT also publicized 31inch curved FHD OLED panel this time even though they have exhibited 31inch FHD OLED panel in the past.

About 80inch was realized by attaching 3 Curved OLED panels, and resolution was 5760*1080 along with 150nits brightness.

Two enterprises manufactured the product together by applying WRGB+CF structure having been produced massively in LG Display.

In this exhibition, BOE and CSOT became to have first tile in Chinese enterprises with 55inch UHD OLED and 31inch curved OLED, and it is expected that it could be new drive of WRGB OLED panel market afterwards.

BOE and CSOT are manufacturing the panel for OLED TV in Gen8 pilot line of Hefei and Gen4.5 R&D line of Shenzhen, China respectively, and two enterprises are under positive consideration about large-scale OLED mass production lines.

Currently LG Display possesses mass production lines uniquely in relation with large-scale OLED panel market, and is leading OLED panel market alone. In future, BOE and CSOT are expected to join in large-size OLED panel market, and it is anticipated that market expansion through competitions in large-size OLEF panel market could be made.

Visualization of display for mirror-less automobiles, Green light to OLED display

After Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport did pre-announcement of legislation about partial revised plan of ‘Regulations on the performance and standards of automobiles and auto parts’ on the 7th, interests in ‘mirror-less automobiles’ having not side mirror (rearview mirror) are getting hot. This is a method of securing eyesight through display screen in the car after installing subminiature camera to car front and rear and also front doors of both sides, and solving blind zone problem which was the defect of existing side mirror and improving fuel efficiency and designs are expected, even though there are problems on functional errors and design development.

Thus, display for mirror-less automobiles is getting attentions as a drive of new market in display market for automobiles. Display fields for automobiles belongs to the industry to which creating high added value is expected because further customization is required compared to mobile and TV. So LGD or SDC panel enterprises are developing products for market penetration, and two companies are known as setting up policy of progressing differentiating strategies differently from Taiwan, Japanese companies by focusing on Flexible OLED especially.

Flexible OLED has thin, light characteristics and a nature to be able to bend, so it is favorable to mirror-less automobiles requiring new designs from free installing aspects. Also, mirror-less is being evaluated to be suitable to the display for automobiles because it can implement high visibility with very fast speed, contrast range, and wide viewing angle. On July 1st last year, Continental Corporation, auto parts supplier, revealed the possibility of better eyesight provision even in dark situations or the rain while introducing several merits of mirror-less automobiles to which 2 OLEDs were applied through its homepage. In addition, Alfred Eckert, Director of the Advanced Engineering department in Continental’s Chassis & Safety Division mentioned “The effects of unwanted optical phenomena such as glare and weak light can also be compensated”

<Mirror-less concept car to which 2 OLEDs were applied> (Source: www.continental-corporation.com)

Samsung Electronics is recently propelling automobile electric apparatus business in earnest by taking over Harman, US automobile electric company, and the industry foresees that competency of Samsung Electronics’ OLED and semiconductor would make great synergy effect to electric apparatus business. Furthermore, they lighted up goals such like securing world 30% market share in display for automobiles based on OLED display in 2018, and achieving 2 trillion won in sales.

In this way, OLED display is expected to play core roles in expanding business to electric field industry from electronic/display industry, and it is anticipated that OLED could be a new dynamic to growth of display industry.

Solution Process OLED TV is prospected to be launched on the market in 2019, targeting the Mid-end TV Market

According to “Market Entry Analysis for Solution Process OLED -The Possibilities and Opportunities” issued on November 14 by Ubiresearch, OLED TV, produced in solution process method, is prospected to be launched on the market in 2019.

Solution process is a technology which enables producing OLED panel in RGB pixel structure without any panel division on a device higher than G8, which major AMOLED panel producers has actively engaged in developing.

However, lamp efficiency and life cycle have no option to decrease because luminescent materials have lower purity than that of evaporation materials as luminescent materials applied to solution process should be mixed with various solvents in order to make the existing evaporation materials ink. Nevertheless, why major panel producers has actively engaged in developing solution process is that production cost can be declined as the usage efficiency of luminescent materials is high without using color filters and its structure is simpler than that of OLED panel using WRGB method.

According to the report, it is said that although developing luminescent materials for solution process OLED has been fully engaged, it should be more efficient than that of WRGB methods so as to enter the premium market. However, it seems substantially difficult that the capacity of solution process OLED surpasses that of WRGB as WRGB has been developed in top emission structure to improve its efficiency by over 20% and evaporation materials have also constantly been developed. Rather, based on proper level of life cycle and efficiency, it would be competitive to replace LCD targeting the mid-end TV market, according to the report.

Issues on OLED, QLED, hybrid QD, which can be applied to solution process and possibilities to enter the market, comparative analysis on the capacity of present solution process OLED, supply chain of QD industries, and major soluble OLED material producers are included in this “Market Entry Analysis for Solution Process OLED -The Possibilities and Opportunities” and it is expected to help the relevant producers understand the solution process industry.

Meanwhile, it is predicted that the market of large-scaled solution process OLED panel over 55 inch will begin in earnest being mass-produced as of 2019 and have accounted for the entire wide OLED panel market by approximately 15% growing by approximately US$ 1,000 million by 2021.

Sunic System’s Successful Demonstration of 1.1um Shadow Distance, High resolution up to 1500 ppi

Sunic System announced at 2016 IMID Business Forum that it succeeded in implementing 1.1um shadow distance by using plane source evaporation and 100um shadow mask. 1.1um shadow distance is able to manufacture 1000ppi~1500ppi high resolution.

Plane source evaporation is a technology to evaporate OLED light-emitting material on metal plate, invert it, apply heat to the metal plate, and vertically evaporate OLED light-emitting material. When the shadow angle(Ф) of OLED light-emitting material evaporation is 90 degrees, the value of SD(Shadow distance, step height / tanФ) is zero (0) theoretically. So, it is possible to design thick and high resolution FMM, which means high-resolution AMOLED panel can be manufactured. This principle was announced for the first time at IMID 2016 Business Forum, attracting big attention.

Sunic System Dr. Hwang Chang-hoon said “If we lower step height up to 3um by reducing the thickness of shadow mask based on this result, 0.37um shadow distance would be possible, which means we can manufacture maximum 2250ppi(11K) high resolution AMOLED panel. Accordingly, we will put spurs to development of 0.37 shadow distance”.

Also, he announced that co-evaporation of host and dopant that had been thought to be impossible in plane source has been resolved using flashing evaporation. He also proved that if donor film goes through flashing evaporation after co-evaporation of host and dopant, host and dopant can co-evaporate, and color control becomes easier by controlling dopant ratio to manufacture donor film.

OLED enabling various styling and designs is perfect to lighting for automobiles

Applications of various lighting such as LED and OLED etc. have been expanded so as to implement unique designs and diversified functions of own brand by each automotive company as well as developments of automotive industry including smart-car and connected-car etc. are being made at the same time. In this regard, Center Head Ju Jae-young of Korea Photonics Technology Institute stated current situation by saying “Lighting for vehicles belongs to the business which expects profitability, but it is not easy for late starters to break in because entry barrier is high from characteristics of automotive industry. Ultimately, whether to stimulate purchase desires is important.” Also, he counted ‘styling possibilities’ as one of successful LED lighting by saying “The reason of getting more popularity of LED than existing halogen and HID is derived from the fact that LED has strong points in designs.”

And then, the Head forecasted like “The exterior deco of lamp market for automobiles overtook the interior deco market from the start of 2013, and 3.1B USB market will be made in 2019 by achieving annual 11.6% growth in average to 2019 from 2014,” and said “The exterior deco market will grow up over 15% annually, and DRL (Daytime Running Lamp) and Head lamp are leading market due to their high growth rates.”

Besides, Center Head Ju Jae-young stated “In order to enter market by OLED, it has to stimulate purchase desires with new designs which do not substitute LED simply,” and added “There are possibilities if designs are unique, and stimulate sensitivity like Fun- VII concept car of Toyota or lighting of Chrysler having been disclosed to the public in 2013.”

<Floating island bezel unveiled from Chrysler, Source: www.metrododgedeals.com>

Like this, OLED is thin, light and can be bended characteristically, and has strong points such like free designs are available, so it is getting a lot of interests as next-generation illuminants including indoor lighting etc. as well as lighting for vehicles. According to 2016 OLED lighting annual report having been published in August 2016 by UBi RESEARCH, it explains that OLED lighting is known to display same performance with LED in R&D levels regarding characteristics of brightness and lifetime etc. as eco-friendly lighting and having high energy-efficiency, thus OLED seems to have sufficient competitiveness only if requested brightness is satisfied along with each automotive company.

Display for automobiles, newly expected revenue sources of OLED

Display market for global automobiles has continued stable growth of approximately 10% yearly recently, and LG Display and Samsung Display do not save investments by paying attention to it as new application. In this regard, Senior Researcher Yang Seong-jin of LG Economic Research Institute lighted up the entry reason of display for automobiles such like creating effects of new revenue are anticipated.

Senior Researcher Yang said “Display market for automobiles has 10% volume of the whole display market and belongs to 2% levels of total cost, but automotive industry has been developed steadily through smart-car and connected-car etc. In contrast, display market has been withered gradually, and panel prices are being lowered continuously, and thus it is directly connecting to survival matters actually.” While stating display market for automobiles as an alternative for this problem, he revealed the reason by saying “The number of participating companies is a few, and average price of display panels for automobiles to which thorough commercialization is required is higher than mobile phone or tablet pc two or three times.”

In display market for automobiles, Innolux and AUO, CPT, Japan display, Sharp occupied about 70% of total market based on 2015 sales of Taiwan, and LG Display recorded 10% share uniquely in domestic, but Samsung Display, second mover, failed in entering ranks. However, LG Display announced a plan that they were planning to enter the market with POLED to which flexible function was available after having designated display for automobiles as a promotion business, and Samsung Display was known to set up a policy of progressing differentiation strategies on display for automobiles based on small& medium OLED technology, so market share is expected to be increased little by little.

<LG Display/Flexible Automotive Display, SID 2015>

In the display market having been stagnated currently, concentration on display market for automobiles would be resultantly necessary for high profits, and OLED panel could get opportunities of creating new revenue sources by overpassing mobile and tablet pc market, if OLED panel solves demanding requirements of display for automobiles.

Aggressive investment on QLED, Shortcut of OLED commercialization

At ‘an analytical seminar on market entry potential of OLED and Solution Process OLED’ having been held in Seoul Small& Medium Business Center on last October 14th, Professor Lee Chang-hee of Seoul National University and Senior Researcher Bang Ji-won of Korea Institute of Ceramic Engineering and Technology shared opinions about current situations of QLED, development trends, and issues.

<Professor Lee Chang-hee of Seoul National University>

<Senior Researcher Bang Ji-won of Korea Institute of Ceramic Engineering and Technology>

Professor Lee Chang-hee said that QLED had excellent color purity because half-width of QLED was narrower than OLED by approximately 20~30nm, and disclosed a fact that QLED was favorable in color reproduction due to high levels of accuracy when manufacturing it, and efficiency of luminescence material reached to regular levels to the degree of catching up OLED. However, he stated technical difficulties of Cd-free QLED which did not use cadmium, a heavy metal, together with securing life stability of QD (Quantum Dot) luminescence materials, and emphasized that investment on QLED is the shortcut of commercialization by saying “The time of commercialization could be moved forward to 5 years or 3 years according to capital and manpower investing scales from the industry.”

Senior Researcher Bang Ji-won pronounced luminescence efficiency of light-emitting materials, stability, non-toxic QD, and approaches by various directions such as QD-LCD which applied QD CCL (Color Change Layer) to blue-LED BLU (Black Light Unit) by using QD, OLED which applied OD-CCL and C/F (Color Filter) to WOLED, OLED that applied QD CCL without C/F to blue-OLED were being progressed.

QLED-related academia discussed about the potential of OLED positively in this way, but CEO Lee Chung-hoon of UBi RESEARCH said “Development of WOLED will be strived too because QLED has already been developed, and if brightness is more enhanced after being evolved to top emission method from current bottom emission one, QLED entry to premium market will become difficult further, and then pronounced “When new technology can enter the market, considerations whether new technology will be good from certain aspects including performance, efficiency, cost etc. shall be made in case of comparing them with the technologies having been commercialized ”

When 55inch OLED TV below US$ 1,000 will be realized?

At an analytical seminar on market entry potential of OLED and Solution Process OLED having been held in Small& Medium Business Center on October 14th, Manager Jeong Seong-jin of DuPont had time of introducing tendency regarding soluble OLED material and contents of the latest development.
Manager Jeong said that soluble OLED material and processing technology were on the verge of completion, but problems about how to complete Solution Process by combining it was still remained as issues, and also stated that Material performance (T95>9k hr, CE>25 cd/A) and Uniform printing (SRU>0.95), Contain (performance 90% of flood print), Conformal Drying (luminance aperture>95%) would be key elements.

<4 key elements to make commercialization of Solution Process>

Dupont progressed R&D on Solution Process previously by utilizing Nozzle Printing method that used Surface Energy Modification. This method had merits such like controlling quantity was easy and the nozzle was not clogged up due to constant supply of solution, there were limitations according to panel material together with a lot of raw material consumption.
Dupont lighted up a fact that R&D has been progressed to the direction of deposing organic materials after forming Bank with Ink Jet Printing method owing to such problems and Ink Jet market having been enlarged recently, and then opened Ink Jet Material performance.
When comparing with datum pronounced in 2016 2nd OLED Korea Conference by Dupont, the life seems to be developed for Red and Green in priority, and efficiency for Blue. Approximately 6% of Red life and two times of Green were improved, and about 10% of Blue efficiency was turned out to be increased.
Manager Jeong Seong-jin put emphasis by saying “In order to expand market to OLED from display market having been enlarged gradually, adoption of Solution Process is essential, and concentration for developing soluble OLED luminescence material will be made so that 55inch OLED TV below US$ 1,000 could be produced massively until 2020 by using Solution Process in set makers.”

WOLED will lead premium TV market after 2020

UBi RESEARCH held ‘An Analytical Seminar on OLED Market Entry Feasibility of QLED and Solution Process’ on the 14th at Seoul Small& Medium Business Center.

CEO Lee Chung-hoon of UBi REARCH said “OLEd TV will show 16.7% market share in 2016 at the world premium TV market, and lead premium TV market with 68.1% share in 2020.” and analyzed such like “LCD TV could not follow OLED TV performance excluding low price and high solution.”

China is threating domestic LCD market in current wide TV market while displaying material superiority to LCD industry, and cost-effective rate of the wide TV is losing ground to Chinese products too. Thus, LG Display and LG Electronics did successful market entry after having equipped with competiveness in the premium market through OLED TV, and they are expediting mass-production investment and technical development aiming at dominating and popularizing premium TV market.

The most important factor in popularizing OLED TV is price. ASP (average sales price) of UHD OLED panel based on second quarter of 2016 is USD 720, and FHD OLED panel is approximately USD 450. It was expected that UHD OLED panel could lead TV market if it secured about USD 500.

Development to adopt solution process methods has been progressed in order to lower price of wide OLED panel in the industry, and QLED technology as an alternative of OLED TV is becoming an issue nowadays.

In relation with this, CEO Lee Chung-hoon forecasted like “As much as being closed to commercialization due to development of solution process OLED or QLED technology, WOLED technology becomes to be developed one step more, so market entry of solution process OLED and QLED will not be achieved easily. Specially, there are many technical issues in QLED which is considered as next OLED by Samsung Electronics, and 10 years of research will be required further.”

Also, he emphasized that the technology of being able to reduce cost vs. WOLED such as lessening layer numbers dramatically etc. should be developed in order to enter solution process OLED and market successfully, and the entry shall be made by targeting low-end market. In particular, he analyzed that WOLED would lead premium TV, and solution process QLED and QLED occupy the low-end market after 2020.

[CEATEC JAPAN 2016] NHK, 130inch 8K OLED Display Showcase

The 130inch 8K OLED Display went public through NHK, a Japan’s public broadcasting from 4th to 7th October at the CREATEC JAPAN 2016 held in Tokyo, Japan as part of a research on the future TV’s form factor.

The 130inch 8K OLED Display which went public this time has been jointly developed with the Japan’s Astro Design and manufactured using a total of 4 panels, 2 horizontal and 2 vertical LG Display’s 65inch 4K OLED panels.
The thickness of the panel is only 1mm and even after attaching the back panel in order to fix the display, the thickness is only 2mm, implementing an ultra slim display.

NHK has been developing an 8K broadcasting technology for over 10 years, and has introduced its first developed product in 2002. In addition, it has broadcasted an experimental broadcast using a satellite at the Rio Olympics, and is expecting to begin a regular 8K broadcasting from 2018, and is aiming to supply a real time broadcasting service at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.

The contents market continues to focus on the development of the 8K following through from UHD. In order to respond to this, the LCD camp is also focused on developing the 8K and is expected to be at the center stage of the next generation’s premium TV market.

In order to compete with the LCD within the premium TV market, it is analyzed that it is also time to actively develop the 8K for large area OLED display.

[KVRF2016] Even KVRF 2016, OLED leads VR industry

Korea VR festival 2016 (below “KVRF2016”) which can confirm present and future of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) industry was opened from October 6 to October 9 at Nuridream Square of Sangam DMC.
In this event, 79 companies including global enterprises such as Samsung Electronics, Sangwha Planning, Oculus, Sony Co., etc. participated in, and new technology of each company was able to be checked on because approximately 157 booths were prepared in common production center, outdoor center, and business center.

<VR Simulator using a huge robot arm of Sangwha Planning>

While interests in VR and AR are enlarged due to recent Poke’mon GO, many spectators visited this place with keen attention, each company shows off various interactive-typed contents such as roller coaster, paragliding, Sokkuram experiencing etc as well as game contents including FPS, sky jump etc accordingly. .Besides, this event did not simply limited to games such like Eye-tracking linked with cognitive concentration training system was displayed by BIOTECH, and VR goggles for military simulation by P&C Solution, and also demonstrated a fact that VR industry could be multiply applied to whole fields such as education, health, army etc.

<VR 4D Simulator for Roller Coaster experiencing by MGAME Corp.>

One of interesting thing during observation was that AMOLED panel was used to majority expensive HMD (Head Mounted Display) devices. From Sony Playstation VR whose release is scheduled on 13th to Samsung Gear VR and Nibiru, a Chinese enterprise among Chinese companies, applied Samsung AMOLED. According to common opinions of company officials, they clarified AMOLED application due to issues relevant to response speed called Latency, even though there were BLU (Back Light Unit) and contrast problems which belonged to fundamental matters of LCD.. Latency indicates delaying time owing to inter-computer connections in on-line games frequently, but the reason is derived from limitations of implementing occurred delaying speed with LCD whenever moving user’s eyes, even though visual reality should quickly invoke new images too according to movement of user’s head in VR. No matter how the product has excellent computing power, AMOLED application is essential to make the delaying time shown in the screen to ‘0.’

<VR product series of Playstation whose release are planned soon>

Interests in VR have been heightened such like a lot of enterprises and business start-ups in the exhibition hall were boasting their VR technology and VR café was opened in Gangnam, Korea first etc., but there was a realistic saying that even profit model could not be set up properly because related regulations on VR were vague yet and standardization in domestic was not clear as well. Business models and VR industry participation by enterprises become to be different according to legal regulations, so government should provide suitable assistance and methods to make systematic profit platform so that VR industry could strengthen global competitiveness.

CYNORA Achieves a New Milestone in Efficiency and Stability of Blue TADF Emitters for OLEDs

CYNORA, a leader in TADF (thermally activated delayed fluorescence) materials, has developed new material classes that combine both, high efficiency and long lifetime, for blue emission. With these new achievements, the company is on track to reach the performance requested by the OLED industry. The commercialization of CYNORA´s TADF materials is therefore still planned for the end of 2017.

Earlier this year, in May 2016, CYNORA had established two blue emitter systems where one of them showed a high efficiency while the other showed a long lifetime. During the last 6 months CYNORA has made further, significant progress by combining high efficiency and long lifetime in a single blue emitter system. In an OLED device, the new blue material reaches 14% EQE (external quantum efficiency) together with a lifetime of 420h (LT80, at 500 cd/m2, λ < 480 nm). With this performance, CYNORA has now shown that blue TADF emitters can reach OLED display specifications soon.

“Our constant progress on blue TADF emitters was made possible by our growing team of TADF experts and by the close collaboration with CYNORA’s customers” says Thomas Baumann, CSO at CYNORA, “We have developed several classes of high performance TADF materials which we are currently optimizing for market readiness at the end of next year.”

CYNORA’s dopants are fully organic and designed for existing vacuum deposition. The company will adapt the blue TADF emitters for solution processing in a second step. With its blue TADF technology CYNORA will enable device makers to provide OLED displays with significantly increased energy efficiency and higher display resolution.

Representative Shin Dong-chan of INVENIA who won bronze tower industrial order was awarded for developing 8th generation WOLED deposition equipment, and Managing Director Yoon Soo-yeong, Head of Research Center in LG Display who developed 55inch transparent OLED together with Managing Director Lee Jong-hyeok of Samsung Display having developed OLED key technology were recognized as making Samsung Display occupy 97% of OLED market.

LG Display OLED TV, ‘Top in all fields’ according to an expert evaluation on picture quality

OLED TV of LG Display Co., Ltd won praise of the highest quality from DisplayMate, US display expert group.

On 4th (US Eastern time bases), DisplayMate opened an evaluation result which compared picture quality of 65inch OLED TV having UHD with that of the latest LCD TVs through posting titled ‘2016 LG OLED TV Display Technology Shoot-Out.’ in its homepage.

The comparative evaluation of DisplayMate was made over whole picture quality parts such as ‘Black expression,’ ‘HDR realization,’ ‘Viewing angle,’ ‘Color/Brightness accuracy,’ ‘Response speed,’ and ‘Reflectivity’ by objecting 65inch OLED TV (Model name: 65E6) that has UHD resolution and is currently on the market and the latest LCD TVs.

In ‘Black expression’ evaluation first, DisplayMate analyzed that OLED TV expressed perfect black color without leak of light phenomena by controlling each pixel differently from LCD TVs.

Specially, in the item ‘High Dynamic Range realization,’ DisplayMate praised OLED TV highly in that it realized HDR of infinite levels by exceeding high ones, while the latest LCD TVs have limitations of not being able to satisfy black and white color simultaneously owing to the light emitted from close backlight in spite of applying its local dimming technology.

In the viewing angle evaluation, DisplayMate analyzed that contrast changes did not occur even when watching OLED TV from the side, but phenomena of lowered color reproduction rate, reduced color shift and contrast were made in case of LCD TVs.

From the accuracy aspect on color and brightness, OLED TV had little color equation shown from input data and output images when doing analyses with HDTV standard (BT.709) having been decided by International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and Digital Cinema Initiatives, so it was analyzed as having a clear relative predominance vs. the latest LCD TVs.

In case of response speed, ghost image appeared in the latest LCD TVs after have shot dynamic video (2,544 pixel shift per second) with 1/320 second, but OLED TV showed perfect images that had not blurs at all.

In addition, Displaymate analyzed that OLED TV realized vivid picture quality having not light reflection in home background where effects of lamination and sunlight were large because reflectivity on exterior lighting was only 1.1%. This was derived from excellent results of about 2 times compared to LCD TVs whose reflectivity was 2.2%.

From evaluated results by DisplayMate, a fact that OLED TV of LG Display have a different technology in dimensions by exceeding LCD is proved again such like ① OLED TV realizes perfect black color by spontaneous emission, ② Belongs to an optimistic TV in realizing HDR, ③ Expresses same color without its fading from any angle, ④ Boasts of perfect picture quality without distortion by expressing correct color, ⑤ Gives vivid screens without afterimages through quick response speed, ⑥ Has an aspect of being optimistic to home TV environment due to low reflectivity.

Doctor Raymond M. Soneira of DisplayMate said “In terms of picture quality, the 65inch OLED TV of UHD resolution having adopted OLED panel of LG Display is visually indistinguishable from prefect,” and paid OLED TV the highest compliment by adding “It is unquestionably the best performing TV that we have ever tested or watched.”

Meanwhile, DisplayMate is a display specialty media which operates US display expert group, and its influences are enormous to the degree that citation numbers of tech-related articles are a lot as ranking 61 following USA Today among media around the world, and Doctor Soneira who progressed this evaluation majored in Theoretical Physics in US Princeton University, and also is undertaking Representative of DisplayMate now as a display specialist who passed through AT&T Bell laboratory and CBS broadcasting station etc.
