OLED smartphones launched in the first quarter of 2018 exceeded the average DA 80%

Analysis of OLED smartphones released in the first quarter of 2018 shows that the average display size of OLED smartphones and the display area (DA), which represents the size of the display compared to the size of the smartphone, have increased significantly.

In the first quarter of 2018, 13 OLED smartphones were launched from five major companies. Samsung Electronics released the largest number of OLED smartphones with 5 models and Vivo launched 3 models, Oppo 2 models, Elephone 2 models and Huawei 1 OLED smartphone respectively.

Of the 13 types of OLED smartphones launched during 1Q, 2018, 12 full screen OLED smartphones have been released with removing the home button on the screen. Among them, four smartphones adopted the notch design. In the first quarter of 2018, the smartphones with full-screen OLED, which had been adopted in order to expand the display size from the limited smartphone size from the second half of 2017, were launched in earnest.

As the full screen OLED smartphones were released, the average size of display and DA also increased sharply.

The average display size of OLED smartphones launched in the first quarter of 2018 was 6.01 inch. This is 6.7% up from 2016 and 7.7% up from 2017. In addition, the display area (DA) is 81.6%, which is much larger than 71.6% in 2016 and 74.1% in 2017.

Meanwhile, the average ppi of OLED smartphones released in 2018 was 422.9, which was 5.9% higher than in 2016, but similar to the average ppi of 422.2 in 2017. This is because the number of high-resolution OLED smartphones with a QHD level or higher have been released since 2017.
